Gay Rights as opposed to Teen Pregnancy

Why are the religious rig ht so up in arms about gay people but are complacent about teen pregnancy?

Teen pregnancy rates are through the roof in America. This is especially true of the Bible Belt states. The percentage of American population who are having sex out of wedlock is much much greater than the gay population of America. Adultery rates are 50 to 70 percent in this country. Yet gay marriage is the main slogan of the Christian right. They say that they are saving souls by preventing sin to be committed in the form of sodomy. Why don't we see more Christians protesting against adultery or teen pregnancy?

The sad fact is, straight sex is the norm in America, even if it is between a 16 year old boy with a 15 year old girl. But all hell breaks loose when a 16 year old boy wants to have gay sex with his partner. The bible condemns both sodomy and sex out of wedlock as sins punishable by death. Why don't I see the same level of outrage against teens having sex out of wedlock? Why don't I see the visceral hatr ed towards teens who have sex the same way some people absolutely hate gay people? I'd like to see teen sex to be illegal the same way gay marriage is illegal. The hypocrisy of the Christian right is mind boggling. They only protest against something if it is convenient for them. Their "concern" for gay souls is nothing but bigotry in disguise. I hope to see America move out of this rut one day. Society is changing all the time and they have no power to stop it.

One last point. Hinduism does not condemn gay marriage. Hinduism believes that "Marriage is a union of the human spirits, and the spirit is neither male nor female". This philosophy is used to celebrate gay marriage among Hindus. Now, if there is a gay Hindu couple in America, and gay marriage is illegal, isn't the state infringing on their constitutional right to religious freedom?

They may be against both in principle, but it's only gay sex that they find viscerally unpleasant and perceive as dangerous to society ("wha bout the chil'n?"). The religious justification is mostly an afterthought to bolster an already-formed opinion, which is why it is only applied selectively and they don't seem to care about the religious aspects of fornication, teen pregnancy, divorce, etc.

BTW, what ever happened with that "ban divorce" ballot initiative guy?

that guy is still campaigning for the marriage protection act. If he succeeds, there will be a ballot in california in 2010 to ban divorce.

I am not going to take either side but offer what I think might be an insight on my side.

Teen pregnancy is only unacceptable by society and only recently. It was common place to have children at 13-15 less than hundred years ago. But if you ask religious people same sex has always been bad for two thousand years but teen pregnancy is fine as long as they are married first. My great grandmother had four children before she was eighteen but times were different than and it was socially acce pted. I don't know a time when same sex was socially accepted in the religious community.

I meant teen pregnancy in the context of sex out of wedlock. I am not saying that society never accepted teen sex, only that most teens who have sex do not get married. Sex out of wedlock is acceptable in society. And people are not doing anything about it, even if it carries the same level of punishment as gay sex (death by stoning). This just shows the bigotry and hypocrisy of the Christian right who have a visceral reaction to gay sex.

A great letter to Dr Laura  the radio hack

____

Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.
