The GOP 'purity test' that Reagan Himself would FAIL

At a time when the Repubs can't afford to shrink the tent any more, party leaders are mulling adopting a checklist of 'conservative principles' that all candidates must adhere to on eight of ten points or lose critical funding or party endorsements. (There's no shortage of Reagan worship in this plan either; the 80% rule even came from a Reaganism. And a few attacks at Obama no less.) RNC chair Michael Steele opposes the resolution...

... maybe because he knows St. Ronnie himself would've failed with a 60%. Not considering the n/a's like DOMA which postdated Reagan, the four points where

1) The Reagan administration saw record deficits and national debt.

5) Reagan signed a bill into law that granted blanket amnesty to illegal aliens.

6) After the 1983 suicide bombing of a barracks in Beirut that killed almost three hundred, including 220 US Marines, Reagan promised not to withdraw troops from Lebanon--but he did anyway. That's not "supporting victory".

10) Though ultimately signed into lawy by Clinton, Reagan supported the Brady Bill.

60% may pass in Rotten Tomatoes, but it makes Reagan a RINO apparently.

What is a "RINO?"

From the context it sounds like something like an "unpure" moderate conservative? Just curious.

In the mess as a party is because they haven't been following true Conservative principles - in essence, they've been acting and spending like Liberals! And look where the country is today... Its about time we start seperating the wheat from the chaff...

Pretty damn funny ronnie raygun isnt conservative enough to pass the purity test.

The idea of the purity test itself is pretty laughable. Big tent?  As one pundit put it. Yea conservatives have a tent.. its pretty much empty with everyone crowded over into the the far right corner.

They have alienated moderates  independents  latinos  blacks  pretty much everyone but old white men.

They are busy separating the wheat from the chaff  alright.

A conservative believes nothing should be done for the first time

Republican Bob Dole is best known for having difficulties pitching a big tent.

More than negotiated, actually.  And, as you mentioned, DOMA wasn't on his plate, but while governor of California he was instrumental in helping defeat 1978's Prop 6 (The John Briggs Initiatve), which would have forced all gays out of the California public school system.

I have spoken before about the fact that virtually no Republican in the 20th Century would be welcomed by the current Conservative Taliban Movement as "one of their own", unless they shifted dramatically to the Right in accordance with today's demands (a la Mitt Romney's Right-wing lurch).  Nixon, Eisnehower, George H. W. Bush, Goldwater, Coolidge--none would come even close.  If Reagan would be seen as "not Conservative enough" in the labyrinth of lies and extremism and delusion which is now the Right, there is only one 20th Century politician I can think of that _might_ still be in their camp;  Joe McCarthy.

And, BTW, by 2016, George W. Bush will have been so thoroughly painted by the Right as a weak Liberal Pinko that whatever tenuous strains he currently still has with the Conservative Taliban Party will long be severed.  This process is already underway now.

Spent money like a Liberal Pinko Commie - the war, prescription drug plans, bailouts to his Wall Street buddies - Oh wait, that's what Obama is doing times a thousand!!! Neither of them pass the Conservative purity test...
