Killer? Muslim? Jihadist!

Killer? Muslim? Jihadist!

Of course.

Why did I know the dissection of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's rampage would focus on him being a Muslim? Forget that he's a psychiatrist who listened to PTSD sufferers for a living (making a career out of peoples' depression sounds like great dinner table material). Also set aside that he was doing everything (at nearly age 40) to avoid deployment overseas and went so far as to hiring a military lawyer to find himself a way out (sound like a premeditating terrorist to you?). Instead, let's find video of him walking around in Arab garb, say that he attended weekly services, and sprinkle in a ALLAHU AKBAR and you've got all the material you need to keep Fox News in business. Why am I not surprised now that Fox News is asking whether we should have special screenings for Muslim troops? I totally agree. If we can't screen them effectively, then we could at least band those Muslim troops together, where they can pray and fraternize privately, safely away from everyone else. Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Let's face it. Muslims are the second class citizens of this country. I still remember the 2008 presidential campaign and the seemingly never ending question of whether Obama is a Muslim. The answer should have been more important than the question and it was botched. Instead of a unifying response like "It doesn't matter either way" (haha, yeah right?), it was more of a how dare you question my character, I'm an American! response, which alienated many Muslims, admittedly or not.

Maybe this is what the sane, peaceful Muslims have to put up with after certain whack jobs go on a rampage or blow something up. But they shouldn't be handing out apologies and condemnations. We sure as hell didn't get one from Pat Robertson or the evangelicals after Timothy McVeigh, so why does everyone wait for the "Muslim Outrage" after events like these?

Who knows, man. Maybe Major Hasan WAS motivated somehow by radical religious beliefs. But it's been proven, time after time, that once something goes down and a Muslim name is in the mix, there's nothing but religious investigation and Muslim condemnation going around. We need to help this class of citizens integrate fully into our society by giving them unequivocal support and understanding. Treat them for who they are: Americans. Undermining our trust with Muslims by questioning their motives (or, to be politically correct, "special screening Muslims") is not the way to go and the alienation will have its repercussions.

UPDATE:
Seems like the lack of integration exists within the Army too:

"They wouldn't treat him as if he is one of them. He was a major in the Army and other majors wouldn't treat him equally as a major should be treated," the cousin said. " 'Yes, you are a major in the U.S. Army, but you are still an Arab, a Muslim, you have your own traditions and values and we have ours.' He was bothered by that a lot. He wasn't respected as he should have been."

I have been wondering where the progressive outrage is over the way people use the word Muslim or Arab in such a pejorative way. Like the woman at the McCain rally who said she was scared of Obama because he was an Arab...McCain's response was, no...he's a good man.

I remember Cenk mentioning it a few times, but in the mainstream conversations, saying someone is a Muslim meant-he is the Enemy. Could you imagine the tone of the Holocaust Museum shooting if it was an Islamic guy who shot the place up? We'd be invading somewhere, I can tell you that.

But in White America, there is this "I play poker with a black guy, so how can I be racist?" attitude. Many white people see racism as active hate...the bubbling, instinctive& nbsp;fear they have over Islam...well that's just common sense. It is Common sense that said women were too feeble minded to vote, or that Africans were born to be servants to their white masters...this, at one point in time, was the common sensibility&nbs p;of the culture. It doesn't feel like racism if you don't bother to think too much about it. Through the Civil Rights movement around the world, people began questioning themselves, began seeing how prejudice is actually BAD for our country...

But, to some, that Civil Rights thing was about black people, oh yeah, and Jews, but Islam is our Enemy, so its okay to assume that anyone who follows it is out to get us.

Sorry...just wanted to say thanks for pointing this all out, didn't mean to ramble. Its just for SOME reason, insidious racism just gets to me.

I absolutely agree with you. Jon Soltz has written a piece at the Huffington Post in which he speaks out against the stereotyping of Muslim Americans in the US military. He is an Iraq vet, and he has served with Muslim Americans.

I love muslims. Apart from the fact that they're literally the politest people in the world, in my own opinion, I love the fact that my country is increasingly pluralistic. It gives me much honour to know I share my country with many other interesting cultures, and I draw value from learning about them.

Unfortunately, in America today, Muslims are the new communists. They're the constant target of ideological extremists in the neoconservative and fundamentalistic conservative movements, and the media is stupid enough to propagate their intolerance because, as someone else said, Muslims are second class citizens in America. Nearly no one defends them. Nearly no one takes the time to understand them, let alone talk to them. That's why they are easy targets for the media.

One possible solution would be to encourage muslims to become more politically active in our respective democracies. Encourage them to run for mayor, or state senator, governor, congress, the Senate, and yeah, president. Ask them to talk publically about their political views so both the conservatives and the liberals can see that muslims are, indeed, regular conservatives and liberals and not some outside group the paranoid think are trying to invade America.
