Push

I've read the book, Push, for which the movie, "Precious" is based and I can't say that I would want to go see it.

I don't want to spoil it, but this is a total "Oprah" story.  I think of it as the modern day "Bluest Eye"; both books made me cry.  I think that they are thoughtful and well written, but heartbreaking.  Sapphire (Precious) and Toni Morrison (Bluest Eye) keep it quite real and sometimes I got mad at the characters for not having a "magic wand" to say "Stop letting me be abused" or "I'm gonna stop abusing my daughter".

If you have read either of these books, you get a sense of the authors' understanding for the characters; both use colloquial language very effectively to convey the time and place as well as the education of the characters.  The author of Push was actually a literacy teacher in Harlem.

I don't want to give the impression that this movie is not worth seeing, but I'd probably being bawling like Paula Abdul all over the place.
