The MSNBC 10PM Slot: It's Ed Schultz.

Sad news for us, guys, but I think we're sunk.

No word about it for a while.

Ed is old and white.

And today, he is guest-hosting 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Game over, man.  Even if CNN did run some TYT clips a few days ago.

Since when does TYT Army lay down so easily?! Seriously? You're declaring Schultz the victor because he's guest hosting one episode of 1600 P. Ave.?

No way am I willing to concede this early with such little (circumstantial) evidence.  Besides, for all we know the reaction to his guest hosting stint might be negative.

For another thing MSNBC would surely take a lot of flak for picking ANOTHER old white guy to host a show instead going with even a small measure of diversity. Don't think they won't factor that in to their decision.

t seems very possible: Last month the New York Times ran a story about MSNBC looking for a host to fill its open 10 p.m. time-slot. The slot follows "The Rachel Maddow Show" at 9 p.m. and "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" at 8 p.m. (which is currently rebroadcast at 10).

David Sirota wants the job. Join the Facebook group "David Sirota for MSNBC!" Email letters@msnbc.com and ask the network to ask the man to join its increasingly popular prime-time roster. And don't be shy about blogging/twittering about his prospects.

Sirota's Open Left colleague Chris Bowers makes the case for why one of our senior editors would be the right pick here. David makes the case himself - as modestly and politely as one can possibly express interest in hosting a TV show - here.

If you've seen Sirota on CNN, "Bill Moyers Journal" or other shows you know that he's articulate and unabashed in not only offering populist critiques of Washington politics, but presenting a progressive vision of this troubled country's future. But beyond Sirota's politics and personality, the clearest reason why he should get the show is simple (as Bowers writes): Don't get angry about the media, become the media.

I think he actually brings something to the table but there's one reason MSNBC will never give Sirota the spot. If there's anything the MSM hates, it's populism and Sirota is an unabashed true-believer. Not.gonna.happen.

I think Shultz is a good guy but he doesn't have(or display) the raw intelligence of a Maddow or Olberman. That's not a swipe but he can't debate a Bill Kristol on foreign policy or a Stephen Moore(from WSJ editorial board) on economics.

That's where Cenk comes in because he can. My one criterion for that slot is a progressive who can discuss any issue at any time and Shultz ain't it.

We've got some difficult days ahead.  But it doesn't matter to me, because I've been to the mountaintop!  I've seen the promised land, and I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we, as people will get The Young Turks on MSNBC  And I'm happy tonight.  I'm not fearing any man, least of all some punkass Ed Schultz.  Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Turks

The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of MSNBC until the bright day of justice emerges!  Turks at last!  Turks at last!  Thank God almighty, we'll have Turks at last!

Let The Young Turks ring!

Schultz has been a guest pundit on MSNBC several times in the past. By contrast, Cenk just got on their radar as a guest pundit within the last month or so.

They responded by having Cenk on as a guest pundit twice in a one week period on 1600 P. Ave. So it's no surprise that Schultz would guest host.

is to email MSNBC with negative comments about Ed's guest host gig.  Maybe not negative per se, but an "he was alright.... I guess.  But I sure did love seeing Cenk the other night!!!!!"

Something to that effect.  The deal is not done.  MSNBC is testing the waters.  We need to aim our AK-47s at that trial balloon.  :)

Ed Schultz is cool and all, but he cares to much about poor people and the working man

I had to stop listening to his show cause it was far too poverty-centric

by Perry on 03/11/2009 12:20:20 AM EST

First, I don't think the TYT army should send in negative comments about Ed Schultz.  It is poor form, unless independently of Cenk's chances at the spot you happen to honestly think Schultz deserves those comments.

Second, I don't think MSNBC is interested in the lack-of-diversity concern.  Other than Rachel, they haven't had (to my recollection) a minority prime-time host in years (since Rita Cosby, probably).  Nachman, Donahue, Matthews, Abrams, Olbermann, Schuster, Gregory...all white, all various degrees of Left.  If MSNBC is thoroughly unmoved by the fact that moderate-to-Left opinion controls their network for 10 straight hours, why would they made a decision for a new host specifically based on diversity of skin color?  If Cenk has a shot at the job, it is because a) he has a large internet following and MSNBC wants to tap into Internet hipness rather than Air America standbys, or b) because his style is markedly different from (and more insightful and authentic than) the status quo of the mainstream.

But I'm afraid the writing's on the wall here.

I doubt anything's decided. They're testing the waters with Ed Shultz. I've never listened to his show, so I don't know whether I'd find him a good pick or not.

As for diversity concerns, they're a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. Plus, Cenk's white in my book anyway. He's no darker skinned than say your typical Greek, after all.

Anyway, should Cenk get the show, I think he has to part with the teleprompter presentation style Olbermann and Maddow do (and I find Maddow is a brilliant presenter). For Cenk to thrive he needs free flow and a conversational format, I believe.

I can't stand that guy.  Hate his show and his politics are pretty crap.

by ynp7 on 03/12/2009 09:22:26 PM EST

What's wrong about his politics? I don't know him, so care to explain yourself?
