An independent kyrgyz newspaper "Лиц
а" (Lizza) has been shut down on march 25th in Bishkek city,Kyrgyzstan due to the current president Bakiev's total control policy over the kyrgyz media.
The Chief-Editor for the long coming kyrgyz newspaper "Лиц
а" (Lizza) Bermet Bukasheva in a statement to the local press pointed that the suspension was considered after the threats she received from the unknown individuals. The phone calls with threats have been coming on the regular basis since the assaults on reporters have become a real concern in Kyrgyzstan particularly after the vicious attacks taken place in the country this month when one of the local journalists Syrgak Abdyldaev had suffered 21 stabbing wounds and numerous injuries.A few days later there was another incident with the same similarity where the victim was a local TV channel chief cameraman in the southern part of the country.
The newspaper has been in business for over 10 years which characterised as an outspoken resource criticising the kyrgyz government's actions on many social and political issues. The decision on suspension was made at the last minute for the safety reason of a newspaper's staff.
Bermet Bukasheva expressed her concerns with the current situation in Kyrgyzstan stating:"We are going through a very low morale sequence,I'm obviously dissapointed on the reaction of the authorities, opposition parties and society". The last newspapers publication went out in 5000 copies.
This is the latest episode in the political spirol which is taking place in Kyrgyzstan since the announcement of the upcoming presidential elections. The current president Bakiev has been blamed for the recent violence against the media and kyrgyz opposition party members which resulted in a brutal murder of the high ranking opposition member Medet Sadyrkulov along with his two colleagues.
The kyrgyz government officials are trying to stick up with a car accident version of the Sadyrkulov's death but the media and the political opponents have been insisting that he was brutally killed.
The country is potentially on the verge of majour disturbances, political uprising and protests. The opposition demands Bakiev's resignation which is not likely due to a recent Constitutional Court decision on the early presidential elections in the summer 2009 backed by the president controlled parlament.
