Joe Barton got it half right

Oil DOES form where it it warm

Oil is a hydrocarbon that comes from the accumulation of plant (and animal) matter that gets compressed by the accumulation of rock over top.  Thus, you need a lot of plants growing and dying, and then millions of years later getting covered by layers of sediment.  The sediment turns to rock and the plants to oil and coal.  Gas is usually a byproduct.  This all takes 10s or 100s of millions of years.

So Joe has heard this somewhere and thinks AHA!  Alaska must have one time been very warm so Global warming is natural!

Duh, when the oil was laid down, the plate that Alaska was on was near the equator.  During the 100s of millions of years since, the plate drifted towards the north pole where it is now very cold.

Thus proving the adage that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing in the hands of a self-righteous moron.

By the by.  As a planet we are now accumulating very little plant matter because of draining swamps and slash and burn agriculture.  100 million years from now our progeny will be cursing us.  "We'd have some oil right now if it weren't for those damn short-sighted ancestors of ours".  :)

Why do so many Republicans insist that human-induced global warming is not happening?  Is it because the oil companies that fund their campaigns want to squash legislation that tackles the issue? This seems really dumb. I think that even if every Congressman and Senator in the US had the same take on the issue as Al Gore, every economically accessible gallon of crude oil in the Earth will eventually by pumped our by an oil company and sold.  With new laws that seek to limit CO2 emissions, the consumption of all this oil might take longer, but it will happen, and the oil companies will still make their money.

The oil companies know that they have lost the intellectual battle.  Now they are simply fighting to delay the inevitible restrictions and extra costs that will come.  They are playing a delaying tactic to make as much money NOW as possible.  Yeah, they'll still make money, but not as MUCH money and they'll be competing with sun, wind, and geothermeral.

Interesting thing about people that work with renewable resources.  They take a very long view of profitability.  If you ruin your soil, you won't make money next year.  If you don't replant trees, you won't make money next century.

People who work with non-renewables don't have view.  They have no incentive to take a long view.  They are the wall-streeters of the resource world.  :)

Always a problem when a Republican "thinks".

"People who boast of ancestry often have little else to sustain them." LL

you can buy off the home shopping channel.

I guess he must have started napping the minute  his 10th grade teacher started talking about the lithosphere.

The sad part is . He isnt playing dumb.

Republicans portray the government as the enemy. Then when they take over, they prove it.

Hey, in his worldview the earth is only 6000 years old.   When scientists start talking about 100s of millions years he puts his hands over his ears to keep Satan out of his brain.

composition or formation.  Hydrocarbons were also deposited on earth from extra-terrestrial sources (ie asteroids and comets) before there was organic material from which it could be formed.  Please read the following for an excellent report about oil formation ---> http://www.scribd.com/doc/5 016480/THE-NONORGANIC-THEOR Y-OF-THE-GENESIS-OF-PETROLE UM
