How to fight the NRA and achieve gun control

This is a proposal on how to fight the National Rifle Association and achieve gun control in the United States.

Real gun control has never been achieved in the United States mainly because the National Rifle Association (NRA) is well organized and they speak with a single voice. This provides a strong voting block which no politian wants to alienate. They also have support of the gun lobby (arms manufactures) which provides lots of cash.

So how do responsible Americans fight this well organized machine?

The solution is obvious, create an alternate organization that supports gun ownership but in a responsible manner. I would call the new organization the "American Rifle Organization" (ARA) or something similar.

They would have progressive gun ownership rules like the following:

1. Support for single action rifles, shotguns and Revolver Handguns only.
2. Licensed and certified gun ownership.
3. Separation between public, police and military style weapons. It would be illegal for the public to purchase or own police and military style weapons.
4. No public ownership of automatic or semi-automatic weapons.

Etc.....

The new ARA could hold rallies and events to attract responsible guns owners. This new organization would allow the public to support and alternative to the NRA and still support the 2nd Amendment. It would also give politians a way to support gun control without alienating voters. Only the most extreme members would be left to support unlimited gun ownership. I would anticipate this would be a very small group.

How to fight the NRA (none / 0)

The primary goal would be to establish a unifying organization to counter the NRA and provide a progressive source for Politian's and citizens to rally around. Yes, enacting new laws would also be required.
You cannot stop crazy people from shooting innocent bystanders, but without a unified group to counter the NRA and the gun lobby; nothing will change.
PETA does not have the credentials to accomplish this. I think it will require current gun owners, police and perhaps military personnel with progressive attitudes to provide an initial push.

I know I stated the obvious but just wanted to re iterate. In the real world the people that have to deal with gun violence are all for gun control.

I guess if sensible gun laws exist..then they arent enforced because I can go out today and buy an assault rifle or a handgun that has a clip of 20 rounds.

"Sensible gun laws" are going to be a subjective thing. Most violent crimes don't happen with assualt rifles to begin with, so any laws against these types of weapons, no matter how "sensible", wont change anything or help anyone at all.

Are banning handguns with 20 round clips the answer? I highly doubt that's a sensible gun law. For one I would bet that's already illegal in many states and evidence will prob prove that violence and homicides rates dont change with such laws in place.

As for enforcing these gun control laws, how do you expect that should happen? Do you really think that would help to try and extract "illegal" weapons from peoples hands by any means? When it come to these kind of debates, far too many people are content with chanting slogans of "gun control" without addressing any real logistical issues or even addressing the root of problem, which is not the gun.

Now that you pointed out my ignorance as far as guns go. Maybe your never ending quest to educate us anti gun nuts your next post will have some relevance.
I guess existing gun laws are not being enforced because i can go out and by an assault rifle or a handgun with a 20 round magazine.

According to a recent study, Support publically of Stricter gun laws is down to 34% down from 56% in 2004.    This means we to inforce stricter gun laws would have to regain the public oppinion.

Secondly, Most Gun law preventions of assault weapons/semi automatic firearms would do almost nothing for public safety outside a few mass killings.   MOst are done with shotguns/pistols, which are single action and used in hunting/sport.

Thirdly, Canada and a couple other countries have higher, or close to equal guns per capita, yet their killings per year are in double digits, not thousands.   So obviously we have something pervasive in our culture that is breeding these killings.

your limiting the tool used, while not thinking about the root cause.   Yes guns are the easiest things to kill people with, but with all this anger/hostility supporting the killings your not going to SOLVE them.   Get rid of guns (which would be soooo hard to do on a shear technical aspect).   You would still have people bieng beaten/stabbed/rundown in the street.

When people have killing to do, the tool is irrelevant aside from tactical.   Like in africa right now, more people are bieng butchered by machete's cause they dont have guns.

Killings gonna happen we gotta tackle (as the young turks always say) the root of the problem.   Not focus our attention on the stupid TOOL used.

WHY are americans so apt to violent acts? why are we so much higher in the rate at which we USE guns.

There are countries that have higher or close guns per capita.... lets find out WHAT makes us so different, and instead of blaming the gun, blame the actual cause.

and lastly,

Gun control needs to be enforced via strict criteria, not limiting types etc. THats already limited in most the country, along with # (if you have more than a certain # you have to register as a armory, which requires strict security etc etc).   We need to do Gun barrel fingerprinting, where bullets are kept on catalog on ALL registered weapons, and Bullets are scanned into a database once every 1-5 years on EVERY gun to keep it up to date.   Ownership needs to be Fingerprinted, meaning when you buy a gun from a manufacturer that gun is registered to YOU and you only, if you misplace/lose/loan/haveitst olen you need to within 24hrs be reporting the sale/theft/loss of that Gun to the authorities so that YOUR gun can be updated.

Guns that are used leave a fingerprint on the bullet, the gun database would have a catalog of EVERY gun barrel legaly purchased (which is how most guns start out) giving the authorities a additional lead to find out where that gun came from.

ALSO if your gun is not Properly secured, and is used in a crime (teen takes the gun n shoots up his classroom etc) YOU yourself should be held accountable for the incident, including jail time.

Your son gets a hold of it and blows his head off... YOU Should be going to jail.

your gun should be kept responsibilly, locked, with the key quite seperate.

you leave your gun laying around and your baby shoots himself. Guess what, you just commited involuntary manslaughter.

thats the stricter gun laws i can support.

People are gonna find ways to commit mass murder (with a car... with a bomb.... with a stick of dynamite or packed fireworks, or molotov cocktail from the roof of a building onto a crowd bellow) There are always ways of killing people if one wants too. What we need to go into and Get under, is the WHY and fix the WHY not the HOW.
the how will always change. Until you hit on the underlying social issue that is pervassive and CAUSING this violence.

Let me further say this why ban guns, how about we ban bad people, especially bad people with guns. The solution is not a anti-gun movment.

Why do Somalis pirates take cargo ships? Nobody shoots back..... We need to get back to our roots. You mess with Americans, we shoot you. You have something we want, we shoot you if you don't play nice.

If the world understands we like to shoot ppl we label as bad. They will work to not be bad but be "partners".

I digress, I don't mean to mix foriegn affairs with citizen issues like fireamrs ownership, but we really need to undertand something.

By the population owning the massive arsenal they have, and much of that stock pile is owned by freedom loving americans who would defend their green peace, tree hugging, green energy, non violence advocating neighbor we preseve our right to protect ourselves fom any and all who would impose their will upon us.

If you disarm America, you put your freedom at risk.

Let me remind you, the americans that have killed the most people are usually armed with a rilfe/scope combo and understand what it is to look somebody in the eye before they pull that trigger. We should all have somebody on each block with an arms locker that rivals a 3rd world army.

What are we going to do when the zombies come coe out to get us if we don't?

Because someone who normally lives on a few hundred dollars a year can make hundreds of thousands of dollars in a week or so?
