Osama bin Laden Is a Dead Man

Almost exactly three years ago I predicted the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. And a month later he was dead. Sometimes you can see the handwriting on the wall. Zarqawi had gotten careless and had also turned the local population against him, which I figured would eventually catch up with him. And it did. Now, I see similar handwriting on the wall for Osama bin Laden.

Here are the clues that Osama's days are numbered:

1.    In one of his latest tapes, he was asking for donations to his cause. This is not something that was part of the regular fare before. If they're desperate enough to attach that to a threat that was otherwise bragging about how they're going to rip us apart, then they might be running low on cash. It doesn't sound very menacing to beg for a handout. If they're running low on funds, then they could be in a world of trouble.

2.    The Pakistani army is moving into South Waziristan as we speak. They've already cleared out the Swat valley. Bin Laden was so nervous about that, that he did a tape on the intricacies of Pakistani politics, railing against specific politicians and their strategic goals. Gee, I wonder why he knows so much about Pakistan and cares so much about the army's movement into these tribal areas. He hears footsteps.

3.    The Taliban who have traditionally protected Al Qaeda leadership have alienated the local population in Pakistan by carrying out a series of terrorist attacks against respected tribal leaders and innocent civilians. When you lose the local population, you're living on borrowed time.

4.    We have a smart president. In the seven years after 9/11, the Bush administration could not for the life of them get the Pakistani government to move against the Taliban or Al Qaeda, who had taken shelter in northern Pakistan. They got almost no results in rooting out those forces from the Swat and Waziristan areas. I don't know if it's because they didn't know what they were doing or it was because they didn't really care to try.

But now we have a president who actually cares to get the job done and apparently knows how to do it. I say that because of the facts on the ground. A Pakistani government that was considered weak and ineffectual in the five months since Obama's inauguration has somehow been able to muster up a massive campaign against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in the north. I don't know what the Obama administration did behind the scenes to get this done, but they did it. They got results.

So, now Al Qaeda is being squeezed from the north in Afghanistan and from the south in Pakistan. They might be running out of money and out of options. They have lost the good will of their hosts and might be in some serious trouble here. So, given these circumstances, I'm willing to go out on a limb again and say I think Osama bin Laden will be killed or captured within the year (killed is far more likely; he might even die of natural causes as he attempts to flee the area in deteriorating health). If the Pakistani army blazes through South Waziristan the way they did in Swat, it might be quicker than that.

One final prediction -- if this does come to fruition, the right-wing in America will fervently claim that Barack Obama had nothing to do with it and that any Republican president could have done the same, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Although half the comments at HuffPo are something like "lol, u dummee, osams been dead 4 years now!!".

And yes, there is evidence to suggest that might be the case, but not nearly enough to make it as obvious as they suggest.

Half the comments at HuffPo are the merely the result of a dead horse being beaten with keyboards.

And that's why Arianna Huffington is a Nazi.  The Nazis loved a good keyboard horse beating.

I hope so, but what will teh conspiracy nuts say? If we were planning to catch him anyway why take so long? And will catching him cause a wave of terror?

I think capture is a very bad idea, execution would unite an otherwise weakend force, and long term incaseration is not much better.

If he is killed it doesn't matter by who, they will use it as a rally cry and blame the US regardless.

Its a delicate situation bought about by the threat of terrorists. Its that intimidation that has worked for them.

Lets hope he just fades away and gets 'lost' or goes missing somehow. (Accidents happen)

Is that your idea of justice?  Figure out whether or not it makes terrorist groups more likely to do what they already do anyway?

Why not focus on what makes ordinary non-terrorists consider joining terrorist groups?  Namely, injustice and tyranny.

There is no better advice than "Do the right thing."

As much as I liked you being right, I don't think that's how it's going to turn out.

One thing you (self-admittedly) don't quite understand, respectively you are a bit naive about it, Cenk: if you are filthy rich and connected (that was Saddams mistake: he disconnected himself), you won't be held accountable for anything! Just look at Dick Cheney. I bet Osama and Dick secretly hold each other in high regards, they have done so much for each other's cause..

According to many insiders - including Carmen bin Laden - Osamas connection to his family's business and the Saudi royalty never weakened. My guess is, he never lost his ability to travel in that region, maybe even worldwide. I don't think Saudi private jets are subject to regular customs control. Last time I checked they were pampered by BushCo and even flown in government airplanes. Idk how that changed under the Obama administration.

Going a little further, I think he maybe even is living in the basement of one of his family's palaces in a custom-designed cave made from genuine Pakistani rocks or something like that. I also don't think he is in desperate need for donations, except for donations of willing youngsters maybe. That guy had billions and had no troubles raising money everywhere in islamic countries... Most of the "employees" work for (eternal) kicks anyway, so how should he have run out of money? Of course the richest scum-bags always complain the loudest about being in need for money, just look at wallstreet.

On a sidenote: how many stories of his various diseases have we heard? Some years back he was claimed to be on dialysis, which would be an awesome accomplishement to sustain in a cave somewhere (except for that basement cave).

Bottom line: Osama won't go away soon. I hope I am wrong. But I don't want him killed. I want him in prison, untortured, but with enough media coverage to show how pathetic he is, how he was using his fellow muslims for silly power plays.

I think it extremely unlikely that he is being protected and flown around in this fashion.  He is much too great a liability.  If it were to become public knowledge that he was being harbored and by whom it could translate into a financial catastrophe for the party or parties involved.   The American government would use this as a perfect excuse to freeze or even seize assets.  Most western European countries would do the same.   I don't think they'd risk it.  I think he's caused the Saudis so much trouble that they want nothing further to do with him.

I don't think the war on terror or anything related to it had any negative consequences on ARAMCO, on the contrary, I suppose. The risk of being exposed in public is really infinitesimally small, even if Osama sits right in the Saudi embassy in Washington... (I admit that sounds really outlandish) Let alone if he is somewhere in Saudi Arabia... No way, no chance ever getting a warrant, even if someone dares to think of that.

You would think that after 9/11 with 16(?) Saudi hijackers and Osama bin Laden as the Saudi Mastermind that some assets were frozen? No, I don't think so... Rather a different country was invaded! Who controls the oil is above the law!

I read quite a bit about Carmen bin Laden (that's why I mentioned her), she was Osama's sister in law (divorced, of Swiss descent). She lived with the Bin Ladens for years. Osama's "piousness" and zealous hate was very highly regarded by the whole family and the Saudi King, in their minds, he is a true islamic hero! Some may see him as a liability, but they would never betray or repudiate him.

If OBL is arrested, given a public trial and subsequently convicted in an open and fair court, then and only then will justice be done.

Any kind of claim that he was killed in some cave will leave open the possibility that the conspiracy theorists were right all along and they just faked a story to close the case on this guy.

Personally I think he has been dead for years, and the CIA keeps jerking us around (at who's behest?).  I always laugh when the press says they gotta wait to see if the tape is authentic, and it is up to CIA to decide that!

Cenk

I certainly hope you're right, but frankly speaking, this guy has more lives than a cat slipperier than Perez Hilton"s dildo.

You know... Before I would have said bull. The man is a ghost, well connected with means. He was never holed up anywhere. I imagine he has been rather comfortable... then again who knows how he's living but that's beside the point the man is still an illusive little bastard... HOWEVER.. It's like Cenk said... With the whole army moving in, the fact that he is obviously running out of funding and making requests for support... ESPECIALLY that bounty on his head. I'll put myself out there and side with Cenk. Within the year... Yes. It could be done.
