Free press under attack in Kyrgyzstan

There has been another attack on  reporters in Bishkek city on June 6 around 9pm. This time victim was a local journalist for kyrgyz newspaper "Achyk Sayasat" Abduvahab Moniev. He suffered brutal beating by unknown individuals at the intersection of a busy streets in the capital Bishkek. The incident announced  by newspaper chief editor assistant Ryskeldi Mombekov to RFERL  branch "Azattyk". Moniev at this moment is recovering from injuries at the local hospital.

The episode adds to the previous attacks on freelance journalists in Kyrgyzstan so far this year. In early spring 2009 there has been a vicious attack on  analyst of independent newspaper "Reporter Bishkek" Syrgak Abdyldaev when doctors discovered 32 cutting wounds along with broken ribs and arm.

A few days later TV crew from broadcasting station "OshTv" Bahadyr Kenjebaev has been severely beaten while on duty with further hospitalization. Later there were two more similar attacks on reporters took place in capital Bishkek again.

Kyrgyz media members and political establishment convinced that increased pressure from the Government of Kyrgyzstan on free press associated with these attacks around upcoming presidential elections on July 23 in Kyrgyzstan.
