Want health care? New plan of action...shock and awe

What Democrats should be doing right now is working to write two brand new health care bills starting from scratch, simplified down from 2000 pages of nonsense, and ready to go... for next year. And it won't be a repeat of this year- it will be swift and severe. Or, as the other side might say, it's time for shock and awe.

What Democrats should be doing right now is working to write two brand new health care bills starting from scratch, simplified down from 2000 pages of nonsense, and ready to go. The first bill should be based on the single-payer model. This bill is the one that is least likely to get passed, but we need to start there. The second bill is the "back-up" bill (or "compromise") which is the one most likely to be passed and would include a strong public option, prescription drug importation, and very tight regulations and restrictions on current insurance companies. It should also have a six month period before going into effect- not three years.

There is absolutely no reason we can't try for this again next year. Now that we understand exactly what we are up against, we should be fully prepared. Democrats need to be ready to stand strong and not allow time for town halls, lies, fear-mongering, misrepresentations, etc. to proliferate as they did this year. The Democrats are finally starting to feel the pain of not voting in favor of what the public wants- the public they are supposed to represent, by the way. Democrats need to stop twiddling their thumbs and hemming and hawing, and start acting like Republicans in terms of getting things done and passing their agenda with or without the support of the other side. There is no need to hear the other side out- we've done that this year. We know they have nothing of value to contribute and no alternative ideas. This year was their year, but we still have the majority and we still have next year- though if the current Democrats in office don't start showing some leadership and strength, the majority will be lost and they may not be in office for Obama's remaining three years. Proof of that should be perfectly clear based on the VA, NJ, and especially, the MA elections.

So let's get moving on this!

Next year depends on if Democrats still control congress.  In 1994, more than 50 Democrats were swept out of the House, giving Republicans control of that body for the first time in decades.  It's not a sure bet that Democrats will be in a position to reintroduce health care finance reform next year.

Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Most of the provisions of the current proposals wouldn't take effect until 2012 or 2014 anyway, making it virtually inconsequential if the current proposal fails this year.  And since Republicans have proven that they are bent on destroying our economy, they will continue that trend and be swept out of office yet again in 2012.

Hopefully, by that time we'll be able to vote in some Democrats who will actually listen to The People rather than to corporate money.

Oh!  Sorry.  What the hell am I saying?  Please excuse me.  It was just a minor brain fart, I promise.

True, but there is still a chance. I think this MA election definitely shook things up so there is still a chance they can save themselves for at least one more year. NY is having an election soon that is very much like MA in terms of candidates with one coming out of nowhere and suddenly gaining support. I think the outcome will depend on how the Dems respond between now and then.

In any event, getting ANY politicians to listen to the people vs corporations has just been made infinitely more difficult, thanks to the Supreme Corp. I mean, Court...

We have to get out into the streets.  And I mean lots of us.

The problem is, even with current large Dem. majorities in Congress, I'd argue the majority of politicians isn't really interested in a public health care model, or just doesn't care enough. The only way to make them interested in it is for voters to show up on the streets en masse, and make it clear to them that THEY are VERY interested in such a system. People need to show how serious they are about this. Unfortunately, so far only the tea party movement has made their point forcefully, uncountered by liberals other than occasionally someone standing among them with a funny sign.
