Yet another side of what is going on in Haiti

Al Jazeera has a nasty habit of turning up aspects of a given situation which make it even more complex to understand.

It seems that Haiti also has a rebel movement off in the hills of its most remote province. Hey, what else was missing from the situation?

I was vastly amused to hear that the US  Drug Enforcement Administration has accused this man of trafficking cocaine. He's wearing jeans and a T-Shirt. His (very few) bodyguards carry no visible weapons. One man is on an ancient scooter, and there is another riding a horse. There are no gold chains in sight, no vehicles less than 10 years old, hell's bells, most of them don't even have sunglasses, that most basic and essential of third-world fashion accessories. The only firearm you see in the video, and the only gold jewelry, are both on the cop at the airport.

And you want me to believe that these "rebels" are trafficking cocaine?

That little exchange with the Haitian Justice Minister says volumes about just how "justice" works in Haiti.

Something's off here. The US was involved in ousting Aristide and Phillippe received US training. So then why would the US then accuse the guy who's doing their dirty work of drug trafficking? Did he get to bold and not follow orders properly (like what happened with Manuel Noriega) or is it all just a show?

An excellent point, jhuff!

I see you know something about the background.

One thing about the aftermath of a coup is that if you don't wind up actually in charge, you get removed from the situation very quickly. I would say the man had served his purpose, and so the US backers of the coup wanted him out of the way.

i have little to no knowledge of any of this. but this greatly interests me. lots of people in northa merica hate al jazeera but there is no doubt they do REAL journalism. they always bring some DAMN interesting gritty stories to the surface. despite what most people think i think they are VERY fair in their coverage of some pretty controversial subjects.

Are those actual requirements to be a cocaine trafficker or are you just using TV stereotypes?
