Australia Fried Chicken vindication!

Oh NOES!! NBC offered the following menu...

Wha???

Yes, a black woman who has worked at the cafeteria for years finally was asked what she would like to see on the menu and this is what she came up with.

Watch her talk about it here, bottom of the page.

Pay special attention to her last few words...

As a Black man, I have no problem with this.  Soul food IS a traditional part of Black American culture, and that includes fried chicken, greens, black eyed peas and a whole host of other items.  The fact that certain food items are a part of Black culture is not by itself racist.  It becomes racist when Black people are depicted as having a single-minded obsession with those foods, or when it is assumed that EVERY Black person shares a taste for those foods, or a history of having eaten them.

But there is nothing wrong with doing a soul food menu to commemorate Black History Month (Black History Month is dumb for a lot of reasons, but that's another issue altogether).  This is a COMPLETELY different issue from the Australian commercial where food is being used to soothe the savage Black beasts, and the fact that the food is fried chicken is less relevant.

I mean, would we consider it racist if it was German-American history month and there was a menu with sauerbraten and pretzels? Of if it was a British-American history month and there was a menu with bangers and mash?  I just don't see this as a problem at all, and I don't think any sinister or racist motives are afoot.

That's why I told people to pay special attention to her last words...

(On the other hand, I still think it's ridiculous to link Australians and West Indians at a sporting event to American stereotypes.)

It was the similarity of the image to an American stereotype that got Americans so riled up, even if they were being overly sensitive and erroneously assumed that Australian culture has the same stereotypes as American culture.  Where the people in the ad were from is totally irrelevant because racists don't care if a black person is from the West Indies or Nigeria.

But collard greens?  Yecch!

Chicken needs corn, and preferably on the cob!  I knew there was something about Black American culture that I didn't like.

" food is being used to soothe the savage Black beasts"

Those people were behaving according to their culture, that you consider that behaviour to show them as savage beast is chauvinistic. Sorry, that I can't give a pardon for that, because it is just ignorant and the fact that you still interpret the ad this way shows that you don't want to learn and think that your culture is superior.

gotta agree culturally specific cuisine and its promotion in regards to a culturally specific event is not a targeted racially offensive act. On the contrary, many of the foods listed are also culturally specific to many old timers and rural resident of the Appalachian Mtns (yes us crackers here in the hills).   (Here's your chance for some cultural racisim, you know the ignorant hillbilly thing)  I myself love collard greens and fried chicken, (hold the water though and gimme a beer)black eyed peas etc .... however people who dont see the overt racist nature , not only the ad but Australias treatment of the aboriginal people are living with their heads up their asses. Comparing the ad to the menu is a WTF moment.

"Comparing the ad to the menu is a WTF moment."

I'm glad to hear it! I hope it was as big a WTF? moment as the entire conversation about the Australian KFC ad being racist was for me.

The entire point is that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar with no hidden innuendo agenda.

WTF? is a perfect reaction. WTF? moments make people think.

I'm satisfied with that.
