Guantanamo Interagation Deaths
Despite ample evidence of a cover-up, the story of what seems to be the manslaughter or murder of three detainees at Guantanamo Bay in 2006 under the care of interrogators gets little air play by the main stream media.
Harper's Magazine's Scot Horton wrote this long article that exposes an attempted cover-up of the deaths of three detainees at Guantanamo by the military under the Bush administration. The whistle is being blown by the Sgt. of the Watch on duty the night the deaths were reported.
There is evidence that suggests that three detainees were interrogated to death in 2006 at Guantanamo all in one night. This makes photos of either a naked detainee pyramid or a detainee with electrode attached (Abu Ghraib) look like trivial military shenanigans . These deaths and the new heightened possibility that they were murder or manslaughter is the single best argument for ending the "special powers" of the executive for the purposes of carrying out the war on terror. First, if we find out that these deaths did occur during interrogation, then no-longer should we be worried about the potential abuse of power. We should be worried about the demonstrable abuses power. Second, even if these deaths were an accident (if they were suicides that occurred during interrogation or in the special interrogation facility) or if the suicides did indeed take place in their respective cells nearly simultaneously despite 24H video surveillance and physical inspection every 10 minutes -the veil of secrecy and special facility created for these criminals has lead the world to doubt the integrity of the US military.
There are two things I do not understand. First, why hasn't this received a louder reception in the media? A quick search on google will reveal that only the main stream media in the UK has run any articles. In particular, I have not seen anything on the NYTimes or Washington Post.
Second, setting the media aside, why haven't the democrats brought more attention to this? Though Obama has not demanded a special investigation of this yet, he still has a chance of redemption. He can still choose to be on the correct side of this issue. The republicans, the Bush Administration, and the conservatives, on the other hand, are very vulnerable on this issue. Their man was in power and they argued against civilian courts.
Detainees dieing or being killed in Military custody is a direct consequence of the mentality, philosophy, and politics of right wing extremists. Not all conservatives are hard-core security thugs that think nothing of deaths or murders that can occur during extreme interrogation. Some will surely see that this is evidence just of how extreme things can get when we abandon our principle's, like due process.
