An Intelligent Blog

"I would love to have the faith to believe that the earth is only 6000 years old... BUT... I have thoughts."

Lewis Black (one of my favorite comedians) says it plain and simple right there. There are some people in this world that just go about life believing whatever they hear because whoever said it was good at public speaking. I cant stand people that are so blinded by their feelings or stubborn thoughts that they completely ignore facts. They don't choose to research what they preach and they dont want to hear it when someone has a sensible argument against theirs.
l really want to talk about Anti-evolutionists. There arent many people that believe the Earth-is-6000-years-old thing, but there are TONS of anti-evolutionists. Mostly christians, these people think that everybody is related through Adam and Eve. The entire earth... all cousins. They say there are many holes in the theory of evolution, but they neglect the fact that the Bible talks of stories of giants, and an Ark, carrying 2 of every animal in existance. People who have only had science classes at a high-school level (and many that have already forgotten it), slandering Darwin: one of the most brilliant scientific minds of all time.
Here are their reasons for their beliefs:

Our body systems are way too complex to have been a random act of nature. They must have been designed and created
While i have no problem with the idea of God designing us, the argument that it is too complex to just happen over time is simply wrong. Evolution is not random. Mutations may be random, but natural selection is not. Its just a matter of small changes over long, long periods of time. When one member of a species has a gene that is good (for instance, longer claws), then that member will mate, and hopefully the gene will be passed down and kept through generations until all the members of the species have it. While if its a bad gene (shorter claws), then the gene will die out because the specie will need longer claws to survive, and the memebrs with the bad gene will not live as long. Natural selection is the key element in evolution

No Transitional Forms have been found in the fossil record
Actually ya. ya there has. Heres a list (with pics if u wanna check it out)

Evolution is not testable and requires  faith like creationism
If you havent noticed, it HAS been tested.
Every new fossil discovered.
Every new genome sequenced
New species discovered
New simulation run-
Is a test of the theory.
Scientists accept evolution based on evidence, not faith. If they do doubt it, they can examine it. And of course it can be proven wrong. Just find a paleozoic chicken. Or a pre-cambrian horse

Humans have never seen evolution happening
Ya, we see it a lot actually. We’ve seen speciation, variation of a feature in a species based on environmental change. Humans have actually unknowingly driven evolution through selective breeding. Do you have a dog? It used to be a wolf. There are DDT resistant insects, anti-biotic resistant bacteria, drug resistant HIV. Its all around us! And yes, that IS evolution. Evolution happened by little changes over time. Are those not changes? (Big or little?)

Speciation has never been observed
Sorry to be redundant, but yes, we’ve seen this too.
Culex Molestus (a type of mosquito) evolved from Culez Pepiens (I’m not just  using big words, look it up if you think I am). There are many others as well. But anti-evolutionists say that this is just a member of one “kind” changing into a different member of the same “kind”. But “kind” is not a scientific term… Every time we find evidence, it changes the meaning. They they say “Well, show us a fish that turned into a monkey.” Fossil records show that that took over 400,000,000 years. And thats a long damn time.

All Mutations are Bad
Have you never seen Spiderman??? I say that jokingly, but the notion that all mutations are bad is simply ludicrous (not the rapper…).  Studies have shown that a lot of mutations have no effect. The ones that do are either good or bad. Species with bad mutations die off and good genes get passed on through generations. Yup, there are actual studies, done by real scientists in labs, making mutations and testing their effects. Wow… backing up your side with evidence… whodathunkit?????
Good mutations:
HIV becoming resistant to drugs
Bacteria becoming resistant to anti-biotics
Insects becoming resistant to DDT

There is evidence against Evolution
Fact is, there IS evidence FOR evolution. Over 200,000  scientifically reviewed articles in the past century… amounting to millions of pieces  of evidence. There has been absolutely NO evidence to counter evolution. THAT is a fact.
And no, we aren’t hiding evidence that it doesn’t exist. If it could be proven that it doesn’t exist, the discoverer would win the Noble Prize. Any scientist would jump on that opportunity.

i'm down for that kinda evolution

by voodoofrnchtoast on 02/09/2010 04:26:05 PM EST

Much like tic tac toe, this debate will never be won. Is there a God? Who that is alive and not psychotic knows, with the key word being knows. On the other hand, who on earth that is alive and not psychotic knows that there isn't, with the key word being knows.

People believe many things throughout their lives and that is fine...it's part of our evolution.

When we were young we believed in all kinds of crazy things, some we imagined and some that were introduced to us by society and our parents. As children evolve into adults, those beliefs become biases even though we learn that they aren't true.

As a society, in many ways we are still children in that we believe in many things that we have no factual proof of and that's fine. It wasn't that long ago that we were burning women who didn't drown as witches. Ha ha ha, that was hundreds of years ago...look at the Catholic Church's response to the Harry Potter series. They treated it as if it were a real threat because there are enough people out there who believe it is or at least can be.

I guess my point here is that we are more than likely never going to know as the only way to find out is when we die and since you can't speak when you are dead, those who are alive will go on allowing themselves to be consumed by something that they will probably never know. It really is kind of a destructive cycle that we are in and hopefully our societies/cultures
will evolve with grace.

...for the mutations you listed as "good" to be listed as "good?"

HIV becoming resistant to drugs
Bacteria becoming resistant to anti-biotics
Insects becoming resistant to DDT

Maybe your definition of "good" is different than mine?

by MedfordTim on 02/09/2010 07:00:36 PM EST

You're not putting yourself in the shoes of HIV.

How is becoming resistant to the drugs a good thing?

What am I missing?

Now you're making me wonder if I'm misunderstanding. If you were a bacterium, you'd want to be resistant to drugs which are designed to destroy you (assuming, of course, that bacteria are capable of "wanting" anything). So a mutation that causes a disease to become drug-resistant is a mutation in favor of the "interests" of said disease.

...whatever you do, don't say "bacterial point of view" too loudly or James Cameron will make a 3D movie for Disney...

Sorry.  I wrote my comment below before I read your comment above.

Mutations certainly play a role in evolution, but most mutations are not beneficial and are, in fact, detrimental.  Besides, most mutations are not hereditary, which is a necessary component for evolution to take place.

Besides, from the bacteria's point of view, resistance to antibiotics is a good thing.

Well, the mutation was GOOD for the specie. Its bad for us as humans, but for the specie, it was good. Its like the "Longer Claw" thing i said, the specie will live longer because of those "good" mutations. =]
