I'm Back!

I'm sure you all have missed me!

For the past year or so I've been a bit burnt out with politics and haven't been watching the show much or participating in the forum.  However, I finished my master's a few months ago, moved to the DC area and started a new job and now I've got way more time on my hands than I know what to do with, so I expect to spend a lot more time here going forward.  I also finally took the plunge and signed up for a paid membership and look forward to podcasting the show daily.

Nice to see you here again!

I hope that you are well and enjoy yourself in DC. It sounds exciting, being in a new place and all...

Things are going well.  Too bad we never got a chance to get together when I was in AZ.  Hold down the fort our there in the sunny southwest.

We jumped ship right before my wife was going to have to take a big pay cut.  If people think the federal budget is a wreck, it's nothing compared to what's going on in the state house in Phoenix!  I feel sorry for poor Jan, she seems like a nice enough lady but she's in WAY over her head.

...that can help some with that paranoia - but, just in case I'm wrong, I advise you hunt up an Elementary School desk from the early 60's in case you have to Duck And Cover. Watch the following and substitute "jihadist" for "the atomic bomb"... Welcome back, Mook! Don't you DARE get a job with a lobbying firm.

If you - and all the rest of the Right minded thinkers whose brains exploded when he said that had said, "This is what happens when someone goes off script!" I'd be right there with ya, but that snippet is not only HUGELY out of context, it's out of place. It wasn't part of the written speech (so much for the "Mr. Teleprompter" hype). For your edification, if not education, I have embedded the entire speech here. The dreaded quote comes at 16:43.

Below the embed, I have copied the part of the speech where it occurred. I didn't mark every deviation of his words from his script, if you feel so inclined you can click on the previous link and read along. I did insert the quote into the written words, highlighted, so they may be understood. My own take wasn't so much that he was calling for a brown-shirted squad of thugs as he was better funding for AmeriCorps, the Peace Corps, and the other alternatives to military service.

Just as we must value and encourage military service across our society, we must honor and expand other opportunities to serve. Because the future of our nation depends on the soldier at Fort Carson, but it also depends on the teacher in East LA, the nurse in Appalachia, the after-school worker in New Orleans, the Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, and the Foreign Service officer in Indonesia. Americans have shown that they want to step up. But we're not keeping pace with the demand of those who want to serve, or leveraging that commitment to meet national challenges. FDR not only enlisted Americans to create employment, he targeted that service to build our infrastructure and conserve our environment. JFK not only called on a new generation, he made their service a bridge to the developing world, and a bright light of American values in the darkest days of the Cold War.

Today, AmeriCorps - our nation's network of local, state and national service programs - has 75,000 slots. I know firsthand the quality of these programs. My wife Michelle once left her job at a law firm to be the founding director of an AmeriCorps program in Chicago that trains young people for careers in public service. These programs invest Americans in their communities and their country. They tap America's greatest resource - our citizens.

As President, I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots, and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their efforts connected to a common purpose. People of all ages, stations, and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem - they are the answer.

We'll send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods. We'll enlist veterans to help other vets find jobs and support, and to be there for our military families. And we'll also grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. And we'll use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create an online network where Americans can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment, and skill sets; you'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities. This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda, and make their own change from the bottom up.

We also need to invest in ideas that can help us meet our common challenges, because more often than not, the next great social innovation won't be generated by the government.

You managed to turn his post into all about you.

It's a pity some saw fit to allow your announcement to become a troll tickle fight. When will they learn.

Anyway, a chemical engineer working for a DOE lab on energy and environmental issues? – Could be just what this forum, and TYT itself, needs. Man does not live by politics alone.

Hope you don’t fritter away that free time on pointless mud wrestling with trolls, but rather inject some needed reality into some of the actual discussions.

Unlike most I don't find Ken or Bobo to be trolls.  While I rarely agree with them, we are generally able to have rational debates on topics.  I've been posting on and off for a good 5 or 6 years (from the "old" board before TYT switched websites), I just took a bit of a break from the board for a year or so because I had more important things going on in my life.  You can take a look at some of my old posts to see some of my previous discussions with Ken, Bobo, Tim, Fred, and others .

I know you were a regular poster and a valuable contributor. The rational debates to which you refer serve only to demonstrate what they are capable of if they so choose. The fact that most do consider them trolls speaks for itself, and I don’t need to elaborate on what the presence of trolls can do to a forum. Maybe they'll moderate their behavior with you around more, like class clowns when the teacher is in the room. We'll see.

Looking forward to seeing, in due course, your current views on various aspects of the energy situation, including the administration's "policies" and the effectiveness of Steven Chu (to the extent that you feel able to comment on the latter two, given your circumstances).

Nope, not much chance of that, although you can probably count on an increased level of frustration with ineptitude and corruption within the political system at large.  I've already largely accepted that real political solutions to the most important problems we face as a society are for all intents and purposes impossible within our current political system no matter who we elect.

Your sustainable outpost is probably a good idea for someone of your means.  Glad to hear it is coming along well.  Do you have a solar hot water system?  Any passive solar design in the structure?  Have you done any calculations of the true carrying capacity of your outpost?  I'm not convinced the "lone wolf" approach is the best for such a situation.  Small groups seem to be much more resilient than single individuals or small families when the SHTF.  If you're interested send me an IM or email, I might have some ideas on how you can improve it and possibly even profit a bit from your outpost.
