Bait and switch

During Pres Obama's campaign for the Democratic nomination he proposed canceling the Constellation program and funnel the money into early Kindergarten education.  However, once he got the nomination, he changed gears and promised to continue the Constellation program to secure the votes of Florida and Texas.  Guess what, he lied.

Looking back over the campaign promises, here is what candidate Obama said:

If elected President, Senator Barack Obama plans to delay Project Constellation for at least five years, putting the saved money into a new $10-billion-a-year education program that would, in essence, nationalize early-education for children under five years old to prepare them for the rigors of kindergarten and beyond.

"Why single out the space budget to cut for this program? “NASA is no longer associated with inspiration,” Obama told a campaign rally audience in March. The silence from space advocacy groups in response to this policy, made public in November, has been deafening. As I have discovered in recent weeks, Obama is personally adamant about this approach, if the details of its implementation remain hazy."

In August of 2008, candidate Obama issued a 7 page paper which said that:

"Since 1981, the Space Shuttle has been NASA’s workhorse. Its retirement will leave NASA without human spaceflight capability until the first elements of the Constellation program are operational, some five years later.  This gap between the retirement of the Space Shuttle and the entry into service of its replacement is a serious concern. Barack Obama is committed to making the necessary investments to ensure we close this gap as much as is technically feasible and to minimize reliance on foreign space capabilities. He also will work with the space industry to ensure retention of workforce and technical capabilities during the transition from the shuttle to its successor.
• Retaining Options for Additional Shuttle Flights: Barack Obama supports Congressional efforts to add at least one additional Space Shuttle flight to fly a valuable mission and to keep the workforce engaged. He will work to ensure there is adequate funding to support that additional flight so that it does not interfere with developing the Shuttle’s successor.
• Speeding the Next-Generation Vehicle: Obama will expedite the development of the Shuttle’s successor systems for carrying Americans to space so we can minimize the gap. This will be difficult; underfunding by the Bush administration has left NASA with limited flexibility to accelerate the development of the new systems."

The current budget has no human space flight capability and no way to close the gap.  Epiphany or did candidate Obama lie to get votes.

Here are candidate Obama's words in a campaign speech in Florida: "We cannot cede our leadership in space. That's why I will help close the gap and ensure that our space program doesn't suffer when the Shuttle goes out of service by working with Senator Bill Nelson to add at least one additional Space Shuttle flight beyond 2010; by supporting continued funding for NASA; by speeding the development of the Shuttle's successor; and by making sure that all those who work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the Shuttle is retired – because we cannot afford to lose their expertise."

Now, flash to today.  The shuttle is canceled, no extension.  Constellation is canceled and along with it go 22,000 jobs in Florida during our worst economic downturn in 60 years.

Our 2011 defense budget is 708 billion.  Let's take 3 billion from defense and defend our future in space. Hold Pres Obama to his campaign promises or at least one of his promises.

couldnt care less who's leading in space but that one statement of obama's disturbs me:
“NASA is no longer associated with inspiration”
err, wrong. how can he possibly say that to the most accomplished research facility in the world. go and ask students of physics, math or computer sciences whether they would object to a NASA job.

space projects can be similar in size and job creating prospect to defense projects. so yeah taking some from the bloated defense budget would be smart but there's no way to get around the MI-complex. they want their sweet government money.

I obviously doesn't have to be either/or.

But I was never a ray-gun-oid. I'm not against big government just ineffective government.

Who said that? Sounds familiar... Oh yeah, candidate Obama.
