John McCain and the lesser Dems' smear campaign

Ben's comment that McCain struck him as a "genuine" guy inspired me to write this post.

Did anyone else feel uneasy when they listened to Air America or read some of the liberal blogs during the '08 campaign?

A few pundits and hosts tried to smear McCain's war record in the same nonsensical manner in which the cavemen attempted to smear Kerry's record.
I remember that Sam Seder was one of the worst smearers, which is probably partly why his radio career is deader than Bob Hope.
He said things like McCain received preferential treatment because he was an admiral's son. Some of the analysis was actually true-- he was an admiral's son and tiny concessions were made-- but he made it seem as if he was sipping strawberry dacaries while wearing a fez hat and sitting on a luxurious couch. I wasn't a McCain fan, but it pissed me off. The man pissed away 5 years of his life in hell. This was the same Sam Seder who ran a "fight ing Dems" segment that showcased Democrats who were running for Congress simply because they served in wars-- a segment that was an utter failure, of course. I think only two or three of the people who appeared on the show actually had successful runs.

There were so many other things that liberals could have attacked, but a few of them seemed intent on lying about his "hero" status.

what both sides do. And its annoying as hell. But that what they think they have to do to get ratings. And to some extent they do have to do that.

did mcain run across a mine field to save someone?

he got shot down... I know he had a rough time.. so did the other prisoners in the same camp

and the term sports hero really gets me

they are heros because they can run fast or hit a ball?

well run fast  when they are doing massive amounts of steroids.

The word hero is over used and misused   its practically meaningless in my eyes

...for what he believed to be his duty, even though his true duty was to refuse to serve in an unjust war, motivated by a lie, whose main focus was to help a few rich people make even more money.

He was stupid and unlucky, but he did put his life on the line.  But a "hero"?  I have to agree with you.

America killed, at a minumum, two million people in order to assure that they would not have the right to vote as they had been guaranteed by a treaty that we violated.  I'm sorry for what we did to the draftees, but McCain was not a draftee.  He was a volunteer for an unjust war.  I'm sorry that he suffered so much pain at the hands of his enemy, but they were not my enemy, and he shouldn't have been shooting at them.

The Manchurian candidate he was the poster boy for it. I looked for people supporting him and did not  find a real one it was actually sad. But hotshot Johnie McCain was a collaborator on ce in captivity.

I am not a McCain fan, and I absolutely opposed the Vietnam war.  But calling McCain a collaborator is not only ridiculously unjust, having absolutely no basis in fact, but it reflects more on you than your accusation does on him.

No one who was imprisoned with McCain supports your accusation in any way.

...during the war were at least admirable, and at best heroic.  He refused to throw some of his fellow soldiers into harm's way, and as a result he chose to continue being tortured by the enemy.  Not every single decision McCain made through the Viet Nam war was heroic or even justifiable, but he gave up his body and a good deal of his sanity for his country in a way that 90% of our citizenry would never do.

Today, however, I no longer regard McCain's legacy as heroic.  As much service as he showed for his country and his ideals in the 1960's, his legacy should forever be overwhelmed by the astonishingly un-patriotic disservice to the country he performed in August, 2008 when he chose an unconscionably unqualified, ignorant, immature, megalomaniacal, dangerous extremist who he had (almost) never met to potentially be the next president.

Everyone of our soldiers that conducts himself/herself honorably is a hero.  The Vietnamese govt offered to release McCain because his father was an admiral and John McCain refused to go without his comrades in arms.  Whatever else John McCain is, he is a hero.  When he did that he wasn't going to run for President, he was just being who he is.

His judgment today is obviously impaired.  He picked Sarah Palin.  Very scary.

Don't waste your vote, vote Green or Independent in the next election.
