Bankers, Democrats, and the 21st Century

I think the health care fight will fade into history quickly, but the Democratic capitulation on the banking crisis will become an epochal reference point for an entire generation.
I used to think teaching college students about hegemony and ideology was a specialized subject. With the schooling of our national consciousness on the intellectual capture of Democrats, of Obama especially, I think the relation of ideology and hegemony goes straight to the center of post-secondary education without difficulty. Not that it shouldn't always have been there, but it hasn't had the mainstream legitimacy it needed, and now it does. Chomsky used to be left-wing fringe, and now he's just banal. The fact that Paul Volcker, Elizabeth Warren, Simon Johnson and other mainstream types are making these points as though it's common sense means that we're entering an entirely new intellectual regime, a paradigm shift.
