Tears of Optimism
posted by KindaGamey
Firstly, I love that I watch the actual videos and don't just listen to the podcast because I would miss Cenk's goofy wild-eyed enthusiasm (ref: 4/14/10) when something goes right and his inner cynic takes a hike. I'm not being critical, I totally love it.
If politics was a sport, Cenk's "team" would be the general welfare of people and not that of any one party. I'm all about that.
Anyway, I'm positive this has been asked before, but how can we find out about Cenk's republican days and how the transition happened? Is there video evidence? Has he discussed it (remember which show/s?) Did he ever mention it in an article? Is it worth knowing or is it just kind of a *shrug* story?
Reading about Arianna Huffington's Republican to Liberal conversion was absolute fascinating to me and I assumed Cenk's would be as well? (what if they discussed it together? Ana?) If it isn't that interesting or uplifting, well, then I guess I don't want to know. I checked the wiki for Cenk and TYT and found squat.
Random Idea I Just Thought Of:
Wouldn't it be interesting to see, not what Right-Wingers (mandatory: read the wiki on right-wing and left-wing) believe, but what kind of future they would like to see? (A future like the 1950's with flying cars maybe?)
It occurred to me that right wingers may agree on what they want NOW, but even die hard right-wingers might disagree on the type of future they would like to see; and isn't that really what politics is supposed to be about?
It may also interest them to know what kind of future we would like to see. Would we be honest that we really wanted a 1984-style dictatorship with death-camps for old people or would we keep up the pretense of caring?
In flash, I could set up an "enhanced poll" and put it out there. First, you indicate if you think you're Liberal/Progressive, Republican, or Independent Jones and then the program presents you with a series of sliders and graphics to the side of each.
So, set the sliders for how you would like to see wealth distribution in the future, for instance. As you move the lever it changes the illustration from a lot of wealth in the hands of one person, to very few people, no middle class, and a very large impoverished class, and all the way to wealth distributed evenly for all no matter what. Where do they generally set that lever? What percentage of homeless people exist in your hypothetical future world?
What percentages of people do they think will be lazy, hardworking, smart, dumb, gay, any number of things? Can we find out how different their opinion-based world would be from reality's statistical distribution? And if they found out how different reality was, would they change their minds about how to steer the big ship of progress?
What about responsibility? How should we distribute that? Would liberals want all the power at the top, half and half, or everyone having equal responsibility for themselves and others? Do conservatives actually trust the people or would they prefer real decisions in the hands of the few? Do we prefer that? The lever goes from one guy with all the power to everyone sharing it equally. Go for it.
How big do you want your government? As T.I. says, "You can have whatever you like..." Go for it.
No matter how the answers go I think it would be an interesting as hell way to analyze where both sides are coming from. Something about forcing the use of sliders instead of push-button responses makes it more.... I dunno. Natural? Squishy? I could show the average of all responses combined, and the average of those who called themselves Liberal, Independent, Repub, etc.
I think the more basic and generally comprehensive to all levels of intelligence, the more people's own views will expose the disastrous futures they are choosing, the willful suffering they inflict, and the more that downtrodden people will realize they're pulling a political cart that isn't intended to ever benefit them.
Disclaimer: This is just a thought experiment I found interesting. My flash programming skills are getting older and dumber by the day, so I have little hope for actually accomplishing this without assistance.
