TYT: Hatemongers?

I've been meaning to say something for a long time, I'm sure I'm not the first to notice the slight homophobic tinge to so much of what Cenk says.  I know for a fact TYT is ALL ABOUT gay rights, they'd hate to think they're contributing to the continued marginalization of the queer community.

The worst is the transphobia.  You guys have got to stop saying "tranny" that's pretty much akin to the "n" word as far as I'm concerned.  It's called trangendered and these are PEOPLE!  You have no immunity idol so seriously stfu before you lose all the credibility you have with gays.

So sad to hear Wes use such a hateful word after having giving him a bump in my last post.

What TYT needs now more than anything else is a queer turk.  There I said it.  Jayar regulates on race issues, we need a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered person to regulate on queer issues.

I dont think they give a crap about what gays think

Cenk is a little to conservative  in general  but I still listen

If they put some money back into the site I might even give them money

Im don't think they are doing it to be offensive intentionally. Its just that words like "gay" or "tranny" are common speech so unless they are actively thinking about it all the time its going to slip out every now and then.

by dannyhulse on 07/15/2010 08:00:42 PM EST

Cenk does seem like he's a bit homophobic in the way he always has to follow anything with "not that there's anything wrong with that". As if he has to convince himself a bit.

We know there's nothing wrong with it, but by constantly saying that he makes it seem as if there is.

There's no need to go out and get a queer turk though. That would be akin to the classic "I have a black friend".

by khon on 07/15/2010 08:03:48 PM EST

Even if Cenk is a tad homophobic and stuff does it matter as long as he doesnt act on it?

If anything it speaks for him that he trusts logic and reason more than his personal feelings.

Re: "What TYT needs now more than anything else is a queer turk."

To my knowledge they've never had any regualr queer on air staffers. However, as I recall, their intern Abby (who popped up on air every now and then) was a lesbian. Am I correct?

by rickcopeland648 on 07/15/2010 08:26:05 PM EST

I'm with RuPaul on this one.  The words don't matter.  It's the frame of mind of the user and the context in which they're used that matters.  (Note: I haven't heard today's show yet, but, assuming Wes didn't say "I hate those fucking trannys," I'm sticking with my position.)

And TYT doesn't need to hire someone from every group in order to be able to speak about them.  I mean, I know they're doing well now, but I don't think the show has that kind of money to throw around.

I never knew Tranny was out as a word. I used to have a neighbor who was transgendered and she referred to herself as a Tranny. Is this like the N word, if you're black you can use it but if white not so much?

So now I have to add Tranny to the ever expanding list of words I can't use like midget or retard.

Can I still call my crossdressing friend a big ole Queen, because that's what he calls himself?

Just for giggles I searched the web for a list of offensive language to avoid found it  HERE and realized that a weird Orwellian movement to elliminate language really is afoot on both sides.

Some words you might want to avoid include but are not limeted to...

Vegetable
Woman
Wimp
African
African-American
Anglo
Arabs
Articulate- This is my all time favorite.
Bastard
Bible Beater
Bisexual
Caucasian
Female
Ghetto Blaster
Handicapped/Disabled
Hillbilly
Hispanic
Homosexuals
Invalid
Refuge
Vegetable

I think you get the idea. Big Brother would be so happy.

that they're just words, but they have histories. words like the f-word for gays and the n-word for blacks have too much a murky history to be typically words. I'm against black people using it too though. thats just how I was raised. besides, I can think of no real reason to use the N-word in typical speak. a lot of my white friends used it because it made them appear edgy or cool or even tough, but as soon as a black guy walked in that stopped. its one of those things where if you know its wrong to say where you can only say it in a certain audience why else say it for any other reason than the shock value.

point being, you can't un-stain its history by using it while its still being used to define a race by people who hate them. I'm guessing you used it tongue in cheek, but still, its hard for me to laugh at and I found 2 girls one cup funny. your view?

PS I don't get into the micromanaging of being PC. I call retards retards. somewhere this went insane. lets just get rid of the statements that perpetuate hate. in other words, if the grand wizard would call people they hate that, I don't think it should be said by anyone who doesn't hate those people whether funny or not.

A history of hatred.  The hatred being the key part there.  The word isn't magical.  It doesn't make people hate.

The hatred behind the word is the part that should be offensive to you.  Being offended by the word itself gives it entirely too much power.

"if the grand wizard would call people they hate that, I don't think it should be said by anyone who doesn't hate those people whether funny or not."

My vocabulary isn't defined by what words some shit-kicking racist decides to use.  I used the word to make an ironic quip.  No grand wizard is going to stop me from being a snarky asshole.

The homophobic comments come out when those hyprocrite evangelists turn out to be gay

by motelcalifornia on 07/15/2010 08:44:24 PM EST

is a terrible idea. It happens all over and it sucks.

-And here to cover the latest on the gay marriage ban in California, our in-hose gay Julius

Not only does it make you less credible, but it also makes you incredibly predictable and...boring.

When it comes to race issues, having a black guy covering "black stories" for no other reason than him being black, is racist.

To understand trans-gendered people as best I can. I have talked to several, read their twitters, subscribed to some on youtube, read wiki's on them, etc. After all that, I have never found tranny to be offensive to anyone. I hear them calling them self tranny constantly, as much as any other word for a trans-gendered person. Am I missing something or am i correct that tranny is not an offensive or degrading term in any way?

by Maghetti21 on 07/15/2010 10:47:16 PM EST

When I lived in Birmingham my wife and  I lived on Highland Avenue which is Gay Central in Birmingham. I lived in an Apartment were my upstairs was a very large gay man with a fondness for twinks and disco music. My next door neighbor was a "transexual" or as she referred to herself a pre-op tranny. The couple who lived on the ground floor could have been the inspiration for "The Bird Cage" only the drag queen was drop dead gorgeous in drag.

It was a friendly neighborhood were everyone knew everyone and we poked fun at each other and no one got offended by being called gay, tranny, or a queen.

As the minority in the neighborhood I caught the most shit for being a straight married man in their neighborhood, (one of the guys we became good friends with jokingly claimed straight people moving in was destroying the property values)  but we had some great parties, the concert's in the local park were awesome and I still miss the old neighborhood.

I agree that a queer turk could be a cool addition to the team.

But everything else, you're waaayyy overboard.

There aren't that many alternatives to the word "Tranny," and why should EVERYONE tip-toe into the very long, very unnecessary "Transgendered" to appease an already over-sensitive America?  Stop complaining and try presenting a better solution to the issue.  Make up a word that you like better, and  even "Transgenderds" can get behind.
