California already checks citizenship status of people in jail

MONTEREY COUNTY SHERIFF in CALIFORNIA already checks citizenship status.

Seriously. MONTEREY COUNTY SHERIFF checks the immigration status of people arrested. I don't see the big deal with Arizona checking the citizenship status of a person arrested.

with jails checking citizenship status?

I remember Cenk saying specifically he had no issue with it and found it reasonable, I find it reasonable, so who is saying there is something wrong with it?

by Smokin on 07/30/2010 07:50:10 AM EST

that police should know who is breaking the law.  If that person is here illegally, then aren't they breaking the law?  Shouldn't they be arrested and held for immigration?  That seems a bit straight forward to me.

I have a girlfriend overseas and I would love to bring her on a tour of the US, but she can't get a visa.  They're afraid of sex trafficing. So, if I can't bring her, then why should people who entered the US get a free ride.

There are easily 3 billion people who want to come to the US.  Just because somebody snuck across the border and got in for whatever reason doesn't give them the right to remain.  If you are going to let them stay make them get a visa and a a work permit like the rest of us dumb fucks have to do living abroad.

It's a nuisance, but those are the rules.  Why are Mexicans special? I single them out, because they are the majority of illegals.

You are on a rant about going after illegal immigrants, but that's not whats being asked here.

Going after illegal immigrants and disregarding the constitution of the United States of America is wrong, its stupid, and nobody who gives a shit about what made this country great should endorse going after illegals and checking for citizenship.

Checking citizenship status in jails is another question all together and an entirely different situation. For one there are international legal considerations than need to be made and should be made like if there are outstanding warrants and crimes committed in their home country. Another side consideration, one that is more controversial, is they deport many prisoners instead of incarcerating them to free up space.

"There are easily 3 billion people who want to come to the US."

Don't be such an arrogant asshole. Half the world is not seeking to come to the US. Currently we have 11million illegal immigrants in the US, that's only 0.2% of the ridiculous number you pulled out of your ass, and considering "how easy it is to enter the country illegally" ,one this is for sure, that you are talking out of your ass.

I'm personally one US citizen looking at other better places to immigrate to like Sweden, where the quality of life is far better for the majority of citizens than here in the states, and there are many other countries out there that can boast about being a better place to live than the US as well, so check your ego.

then tell me I'm talking out of my ass.  You have no idea how difficult the US makes it for people to get visas.  Just because someone lives next door doesn't give them the right to walk into your house and then park themselves on your sofa.  Why should Mexicans have anymore rights than any other person wanting to come to America?  Either we enforce the laws we have or we open the doors.

We have a treaty that requires the US to notify other countries when we put their nationals in prison.  The US is required to allow foreign council for the prisoners.  So, of course the prisons must establish whether someone is an illegal.

And does the phrase "No shit Sherlock" sound familiar?

If you try to enforce the laws by disreguarding the constitution, then make no mistake, you are an enemy to the constitution and to the United States. You are essentially supporting and endorsing what our enemies want, which is a US without real and true democracy that's does not respect its citizen's freedoms. Thats what you do when you endorse the idea that the forth amendment should be ignored, which is what you were doing in your original post.

someone else.  I only expect our government to enforce its laws.  How does that interfere with the 4th amendment?  How do American citizen rights get transferred to non-citizens?

If a policeman stops you for speeding and sees a dead body in the back seat.  He has the right to arrest you for possible murder charges.  If the policeman stops you and you for speeding and you have no drivers license.  He has the right to ascertain who you are.  That is not unreasonable search and seizure.

If you break the law you have to pay the price. Don't extend rights where they don't exist.  Besides with the Patriot Act, there is no more 4th amendment.

I'm stuck in Argentina because of our draconian immigration laws. I don't meet the financial requirement for sponsoring my wife's immigration. In other words, unless I have money, my right to live with my wife in my home country is not being recognized. That's not OK. As a matter of fact, with the crime rate here and the fact that people assume that since I'm a Yankee I have money, I'm putting my life at risk being here. But taking it out on the illegals won't change our messed up immigration laws. One situation has nothing to do with the other. We need to fix these horrible immigration laws, and we need to deal with illegal immigration in a constitutional manner. If your girlfriend ever does get to the U.S., if Arizona has their way, she'll be a constant target for police harrassment no matter how legally she's there.

If my girlfriend ever went to Arizona, she would have a passport and visa.  You would have zero harassment from police.  You can't pick and choose which laws to obey because they are inconvenient.

If you want to legally fly to America they treat you like a terrorist, a sex trafficker or someone trying to steal a job. If you illegally sneak across the border, they treat you like some poor cousin that needs a helping hand.  You get economic assistance, free education and health care.

Does that make sense?  Instead you should be fighting for your rights to bring your wife to America.  If it's okay for the wetbacks, it certainly should be okay for you.

LOL, Mexicans are the top in the illegal list because they border the US. Common sense buddy. But of course it's not just Mexicans coming into the states illegally. I know PLENTY of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Canadians, Russians, Germans, etc. that are here Illegally.

Our country benefits from cheap labor, that's why the government or big businesses don't care.

It's not that Mexicans are special, is just that our government doesn't care. Not just only them, that goes for any illegal immigrant. Even though a hispanic person will get hassled a lot more then anyone else.

If you want to blame someone for the illegal immigration issue, start with the government.

The government works for big business and they want to break the back of the American laborer.  By allowing illegal workers they push the effective minimum wage downwards.  How many politicians have had illegal maids?

We need a normal visa policy for Mexicans, let them get work permits, let them register just like every other country does.  It is insane to give a path to citizenship.  They are still illegal.  There are plenty of people more deserving with real skills and abilities who want to become citizens the legal way.

What do we want a country of farm workers and maids serving the wealthy or a country of engineers and scientists building new companies in manufacturing to create real jobs.  This whole immigration issue is an abortion.

Even the staunchest supporter of Arizona's laws MUST realize there is a HUGE difference between checking on the status of someone who has been arrested and is in custody and a cop checking your immigration status because you crossed over a center line and he pulled you over.

No one, I repeat, NO ONE has ever complained about checking the status of incarcerated people - it's the pulling someone aside for jaywalking and asking them to prove they are a citizen people object to.

Wouldn't you?
