how you took that smug bastard to the woodshed Cenk. My only problem was you let him get away with accusing you of being against the troops because you disagree with him on policy grounds (which he seems confused about: he called it "politics"--what an idiot). I woulda gone bill o'reilly on him and cut his mike and called him out for the coward he is. Someone who can't debate on the facts or answer a yes or no question straight up needs to GIT! You got to RUN eeem Off!

by hazmat on 09/01/2010 02:22:02 AM EST

Telling Cenk that he was against the troops was comical in it's absurdity - it made him look like a complete doosh. The guy got a proper red assing from Cenk. It was delightful.

Wow, Cenk really hammered that guy, I loved it...EXCELLENT!  That's how you do it...Don't hold back, slap them with the truth and expose them for what they are!

I like 80% of what went on in that clip, but I think Cenk was too inflamed going into the segment. I think that gut level of anger might have detracted away from the points he was trying to bit by making him appear somewhat unreasonable. I think the emotion he shows over these kinds of issues is a good thing, but if he had started cooler and escalated as he got McEwen more angry than he wouldn't look like such a wildman with an axe to grind.

Then again, maybe I just like the more subtle approach where you let your well chosen words incite the other guy so he starts yelling while you sit back and look like "the most reasonable man in America"

Cenk was absolutely right in mentioning defense, but instead of blanket statements accusing a former Congressman of voting to get his defense contractor buddies rich we would be better off in highlighting specific programs that are wasting money. This way you get to villify (rightfully so) the people people exploiting the word defense to get rich and don't come off as being against the troops. (which he/we aren't, but if we aren't smart our opponents will take every opportunity to play it as if we are)

Members of the conservative media regularly highlight pork projects instituted by democratic politicians and in the social sector. (sometimes even rightfully so) I think progressives should consider doing the same. I would hazard to speculate that we might even have more to work with when taking a magnifying glass to the bloated baconfest of defense appropriations. One of my favorites is the JSF alternate engine http://www.cagw.org/campaig ns/jsf-campaign/

Do you hear me Cenk? I am saying you should use your new more mainstream soapbox to highlight wasteful defense practices and Republican pork. You could even make a segment out of it and call it "Things Congressperson X thinks are more important than returning the money you put into Social Security"  You could highlight specific pieces of pork, explain why they are so useless, who put them in the budget/how they got there, and explain the financial loss to the US taxpayer in terms of # of people's Social Security benefits it cost to pay for it.

..ever! EVAH! E-V-A-H!

by Zajuts149 on 09/01/2010 03:25:54 AM EST

Finally, I heard Cenk last night and I was pumping my fist and yelling "Go Get Him!" and he did! Thank you! I just became a Member.

Articulate, countering all the talking points, not giving an inch, not being pulled off message, Cenk rules! I can only hope the Dems could get a clue from Cenk; this is how you face down the Irrational Onslaught of the Right.

IS NOT A PART OF YOUR FUCKING BUDGET!!!!!!!!!

by SmartAss on 09/01/2010 08:02:34 AM EST

That was riveting.

It should go into the Young Turks hall of fame, for sure.

And wasn't it pathetic how McEwen couldn't counter-argue properly so he just threw mud calling him unamerican and denegrating the troops. Puke.

"YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT I'M GONNA RAISE THE RETIREMENT AGE!"

Oops.

by huwrj on 09/01/2010 08:52:58 AM EST

I think I've watched TYT long enough that I can tell how angry Cenk is because of his hand movements.

I just watched it again and... wow he was really pissed. (And rightly so)

by huwrj on 09/01/2010 08:56:12 AM EST

GO CENK GO!

it is refreshing to see somebody take on these double talking LIARS, and throw the lies and HALF BAKED TRUTHS right back at them.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Cenk, this is the best I've ever seen you. You let him speak, but you didn't let him spin, you made your point clearly and passionately, and you defended yourself well when he threw ridiculous accusations at you! There is only one word for this - awesome!!
If I didn't think it was too crude, I would tell you, you gave me total ladywood.

by Earla on 09/01/2010 10:31:24 AM EST

...that there's a new sheriff in town on MSNBC, Cenk certainly shook them out of their coma with that interview.

by OldGerman on 09/01/2010 10:35:17 AM EST

The only criticism that I have is that when you ask a yes or no question you need it to ask it again and again and again, if necessary, if the person is evasive.

I once saw this on a British interview show. The interviewer probably asked a British politician the same question 10 times in a row.  Absolutely refused to accept the dodge.

The brilliance is that the audience totally gets it.  They might not pick up on an artfully evasive answer the first time, but after the 3rd, 5th, or 10th time, they get that the person is a weasel.

Cenk, much as I admire you, how did you come up with this lightweight asshole, active in politics  for about a dozen years before 1993.  When he did serve in Congress he was alleged to have bounced checks on the House bank. Apparently he married into a real estate fortune to support his political goals and even lost his last (?) race to "Mean Jean" Schmidt.  You decimated him, but it was way too easy.  Has this guy cropped up in politics recently and I missed it?  I sincerely interested in knowing.

asshole had exactly the same talking points as the other regressive lightweight assholes..

they all march in lockstep

the incidental stuff ... bouncing checks.. marrying money  etc.. all typical regressive traits.

so it doesnt matter which one Cenk "came up with"

Cenk just made it look easy because he is good at what he does

and damn entertaining..  I have played the tivo of that exchange several times to my friends and fam..  it never gets old!

GOP: I know we spent all the money, so it is not there any more.  So what are we gonna do?  We cannot spend what is not there and we sure as hell are not going to pay it back so you can retire at a decent age using the money you paid into the system.  So sorry.  Love it or leave it.  And I support the troops.

by high5apparatus on 09/02/2010 10:42:17 AM EST

to offer any clips of the Wednesday Ratigan Show. I had it TiVo'd. Sat down, ready to watch Cenk do his work. And all I got was an hourlong tape of the clown at the Discovery Channel.

Booooooo. MSNBC. Did that really need wall-to-wall coverage for the entire hour? No way!

by braveomatic on 09/02/2010 01:54:23 PM EST

we where laughing about someone complaining  that Cenk got cut for breaking news of a hostage crisis

and you win!

yes.. they did have to cover it

This interview is why I signed up here.  I have always admired Cenk for his honesty and tenacious approach when interviewing these types of trolls.

I must say, he could have gone further, but would have been met with the same response. The old tired question as an answer.

Cenk, you are a better man than I.  I would have reached through the screen to bitch-slap this guy.  It's just a money game for him.  He could not care less for the general population.  This Socratic tactic of answering questions with questions is quite old and tired. This smug, self-righteous mind-set needs to die out with these parasites.

by Nic666 on 09/02/2010 08:46:44 PM EST

Look I am a Moderate Republican and I hate what is going on with the Republican Party today.

I am thrilled that Cenk did this to this jerk of a Congress-person (this jerk is not a man by any means).

I for one am sick of the lies and misdirection of these people of the new "Know-Nothing/Do Nothing" Party.

I am NOT voting for any Republican or Tea Party (Palin Approved) person.  Not because I have a great love of Democrats or Independents but because they are lying to me less then these jerks.

Maybe we will get something done in this country to help the people that will get the US back on its feet.

Who would thoes people be you ask?  The Middle Class, go look in the real history books and you will see when a civilization's middle class did well so did that civilization.  When their middle class did not do well then that civilization fell.

Its up to us to vote with our minds and get these lazy know-nothing jerks out of office and put in some people that will work for the benefit of the middle class again.

Lets get some real congressmen and woman that know what to do and to get the job done.  Right now your not going to get anything like that from the Republicans or the Tea-Party...
