Cenk's Fiery MSNBC Debate On Social Security

If you haven't already be sure to watch Cenk's fiery debate on social security with fmr Republican Congressman Bob McEwen.

Crooks & Liars, MSN and Raw Story have covered the debate, it's featured at Democratic Underground and national organizations looking to protect social security are tweeting about it. If you enjoy the video feel free to share it via Facebook, Twitter, message boards and good old fashioned email.

I think Cenk comes off as a "liberal loon" as O'Reilley would say.  Now maybe that's because there's no one else going on a rant from the liberal side of the spectrum.  I know social security is an emotional topic, but Cenk seemed like a bit of a loose cannon, and I thought some of the blame he laid at the feet of this former senator was only partly true.  On TYT, Cenk often clarifies his position on the issue after a debate like this, and I understand he can't necessarily do that when he's on TV due to time constraints.

I'm not opposed to all Cenk rants.  When Cenk lost it on the Iraq war stats, or Debbie Schlussel, I was in favor.

Another point, is that Repubs when they get a question they don't like, go right to their talking points.  Ignore the question--> go to talking point.  It's a bit robotic, but hey it's worked for them in the past.  No matter how many times the interviewer asks the question, they often go back to their talking points.  What can a host do?  I'm not really sure.  It's hard to combat things people don't say, when they put it in code.  I wish Cenk could do more like the first hour of TYT on the TV.  He goes into the issues and uses clips etc to support his points.  In fact he should get The Morning Joe so he can have time to air the entire show... I believe that is a three hour show.

"demonstrating his contempt for America" (or something like that) Cenk could have just told him to fuck off and it would have been cool with me.  It's at the "why do you hate America?" point that you show you're just not interested in having a serious discussion.

As they say, respect is earned, and this guy didn't earn it.  At least not in this back and forth.

And you're right about the Morning Joe slot.  TYT would fit in perfectly there, but I'm sure the staff would hate it because it would almost be a return to the much-loathed, old school 3AM slot they had on Air America.

I don't agree Andrew, besides, Bill O'Reilly considers Rachel Maddow a "liberal loon".   Fuck him, you know what I mean?

It's high time someone took a pair of pliers and a blowtorch to one of these smirking assholes.  When some prick stands there and tells us in effect - yeah sure, you paid for social security but the money is spent, tough shit, you've got to work a few more years and take a cut in benefits so that the wealthy can buy bigger yachts - it's time to get out the machete and go to work.

Don't forget, these same people helped the banks fuck over everyone for years with ridiculous predatory loan and fee practices, passed legislation to make it harder for the sheep to escape the wolves, and then bailed the wolves out when they collapsed the whole system.   No sir, some people need a serious ass chewing.   America needs a watchdog to start doing some serious barking.

NewsBusters puts up a post about it!  I can just imagine all the head-splosions going on over there.

As Sarah Palin says: This'll get 'em all wee-wee'd up.

I just jizzed in my pants!

Cenk does not need to be so emotional, he has right and logic on his side, beat him with it and the rest should be reserved for the worst of the worst, not some common rethug politician.

TYT user Yashwanth Manjunath posted this on the top of the front page of Alan.com, so good on him for that.

it's probably the difference between milktoast media and radio shows.  I would have equated Cenk's performance with Howard Stern.  His guest obviously opened a door with the Clinton references, but instead of building on it and then letting the guest hang himself, Cenk kept trying to close the door.

Less ranting and more superior intelligence.

Don't waste your vote, vote Green or Independent in the next election.

Look at the like/dislike ratio of the YouTube video. Then click on that Democratic Underground link I posted and read through the responses to see if your opinion is shared by the majority of people who viewed the debate.

Doesn't make you wrong or right, but it's worth noting for the record.

TYT listeners are biased.  I like Cenk, but the old folks are going to see a ranting foreigner and a polished white guy getting shot down, because the foreigner was interrupting him and not letting him speak.

Nothing personal, but that's how my folks saw it.

It's Democratic Underground. Even people who normally can't stand Cenk (because he criticizes Obama) LOVED the video.

I saw the same reaction on Twitter from people who normally bash Cenk every time he hosts MSNBC (again, because he's critical of Obama and the Democrats).

But again, being in the minority doesn't necessarily make you wrong.

Don't waste your vote, vote Green or Independent in the next election.

you know perfectly well that progressives are not energized and neither are young people.  The numbers are the numbers.

Something that most people already know, seems to escape some of the bloggers here because they live in a fantasy world. Here are the typical demographics for voters...

Older Americans turn out in much higher numbers than other age groups during midterm elections. In 2006, the 55-and-older age group still had the highest voting rate of any age group, at 63 percent, even though younger voters turned out in record numbers for a midterm, according to census data. Half of all votes cast in the 2006 midterms were from voters age 50 or older, according to AARP. And one out of four were AARP members.

http://www.politico.com/new s/stories/0809/26027.html

But Obama's approval rating among young adults, one of the keys to his election in 2008, has eased to 59 percent. And he has 47 percent approval from senior citizens, a more reliable group when it comes to election turnout.

VOTE – Differential turnout can matter especially in midterm elections, in which many fewer people show up to vote than in presidential contests. Among seniors, for example, 87 percent said they're registered to vote, and they divided by 47-41 percent for Republican vs. Democratic candidates. Young adults are more apt to favor Democrats but not at the levels at which they supported Obama. And they're much less likely to be registered to vote.

It would take a miracle to get the voter turnout Obama had for his election given that it was a miracle turnout to begin with.  Instead the old farts are going to turn out in spades and dump the incumbents.

Progressives are going to stay at home because their choice will be a corporatist or a tea party candidate.

Don't waste your vote, vote Green or Independent in the next election.
