Ana Going Too Far

"Everyone who uses that word should be punished" is just ridiculous.

Listen, I like Ana, she's got interesting stories and some good views on things. However, in this story about the Olympian losing her contract with Jaguar for using a mere word. While, it's in the right for Jaguar to end such with her, that's fine. But thinking everyone should be punished for using a word? That's too far and too absurd.

This tends to be a problem I have with Liberals I've noticed. They try and censor people's words and how someone speaks for the idea of "Political Correctness." Political Correct is an anti-American idea. It infringes on the right for people to think and speak how they feel in the way in which they feel. Hell, colleges have this huge problem and are trying to force people to think and act a certain way with "Diversity" and such things.

Now, would it be nice if everyone would be civil to each other? That they wouldn't be bigots or that they'd use kinder terminology? Sure. Should we enforce that? Hell no. Ana went way too far in thinking that the word should result in punishment. No word, not "nigger" not "fag" not "slut" nothing should be banned from anyone's vocabulary nor should they always be punished in using it. What if someone uses "fag" in the literal sense as in "go pick up that fag" and they refer to a bundle of sticks? Just ridiculous. No word should be banned, no thought, no sentence, nothing.

Anyone else feel this way or am I the only one who sees words as just words?

PS: Does Ford also own Harley? That could explain, why they wouldn't like her using the word faggot as an insult.

feel free to spew whatever crap you want but America  my freind is the land of the free market and we have the right to marginalize and ignore you.  As a corp. spokeman the worst thing you can do is alienate consumers so she had to be fired. Freedom of speach is not a guarantee of acceptance. If you want to use offensive terms fine the offended have the right to speak out against you, they have the right to boycott the company you work for and if a cost benefit analysis dictates your worth it then you have the right to keep your job otherwise you have the right to be homeless and starve. the free market decides who gets a job and who doesnt, play the game any way you like but be prepared to lose thats the real american way.

We had apple pie in Germany, when America was only settled by natives.
This terrible curse called political correctness is really coming from America, just like the nuclear bomb and fast food chains.

I admit that Americans should use it more often as in your video, but to male it perfect you might need some instructions from the Brits:

Ana is expressing her opinion and you happen to disagree with it.  That's all.  You, as she, have every right to express your opinon.  I happen to agree with Ana. Words can hurt and the world could be a better place if people would be more sensitive to the feelings of others.

... but there are consequences for their use. They are powerful tools and can be misused in the untrained hand.

Context of a word always trumps the use of it. Witch hunting and being shocked at an utterance of whatever word is silly and childish. Ana reminded me of that kid in 2nd grade that when he heard a cuss word would say "oooooooooooooooooooooo, you said a baaaad woooooord, Im telllllling on youuuuuu!"........STFU Faggot. Creating taboos for words is for lazy or stupid people who have no desire or ability to comprehend social interactions. They want neat do's and don't to make it easier to judge and witch hunt.

Love me some Louis CK. I was watching his new show "Louis" last night when he goes off on a C-word tirade on a woman in the audience talking during his show.
Comedy gold. cool.. found it:

Didn't George Carlin make the stupidity of banning words clear with his seven words you can't say on tv. It is a slippery slope when this kind of though is followed as every group will define "offensive" in a different way. Unless you want to wind up with some Orwellian society, just leave all words in play.

Be offended, protest, boycott, that is your right. Don't ban words.

The perfect staw man argument here.  Seriously, this should go into a philosophy textbook.

Being a young white male, i have not experienced much discrimination against me in my life.. you can see where is my point of view.

Some people are very sensitive, and some just dont care. Its difficult or maybe impossible to draw a line we all can agree. From my point of view, Ana draws it too far  on the sensitive side, no problem, except that for me, those kind of stories are really boring.

a very interesting question.

How about gossip?

http://www.scientificameric an.com/article.cfm?id=word- power

Or how about a medical situation?

http://www.medscape.com/vie warticle/716730

Hows about the power of Hitler's words when he was orating in front of his admirers.

Hows about Churchill"s words, in some very dark times, to his fellow citizens in England during the worst of WWII?

Is there power in words?

D'oh.

by opiman000 on 09/08/2010 05:11:16 PM EST

but all of those examples have to do with what was being said, and not what the specific words were.  Context is the important thing.

i feel i should clarify my personal position on the issue of the f word...and jaguar...

if one is a rep for a company and one is out working...i think it's reasonable to expect the rep to NOT use the f word, either of them, or the r word etc...

however, whatever words one uses on one's own time...well...i sure am glad my bosses never hear mine. i would be perpetually unemployed.

Faggot seems to be a very flexible word. It started as an insult to poor old women and went on to be offensive term for gay men and now is just a term used to insult people. (Did I not listen correctly, or was she addressing a woman with that term?)

Would you have a problem with the word bastard, because it is abusive to ex-marital born people?

But then people are also perfectly free to say "Hey, I'm not buying anything from anyone who uses her as a spokesperson", and of course, the company who hires her is certainly free to dump her for that reason.  See?  Everyone is free alike.
