Black March

Please share, even if you are too weak to participate.

Thursday, March 1st 2012 to Saturday, March 31st 2012
With the continuing campaigns for Internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA, PIPA and ACTA, and the closure of sites such as Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy', the time has come to take a stand against music, film and media companies' lobbyists.

The only way to hit them where it truly hurts... Their profit margins.

Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.

Wait the 4 weeks to buy them in April, see the film later, etc. Holding out for just 4 weeks will lave a gaping hole in the media and entertainment companies' profits for the 1st quarter. An economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments worldwide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes.

This action can give astatement of intent:
"We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation which will censor the internet."

I did mention that my concern would be the small business owner taking a devastating hit.

by MedfordTim on 02/10/2012 11:57:06 AM EST

If you have real friends (not only FB-friends), why don't you gather them and make an event of it. You all calculate, how much you would have spended on movies, songs, downloads etc. and when march is over you decide on a small business that might deserve your money and spend it there together. That would mean, that small businesses would profit.
If you like movies you just think of a really cool theatre and go there together in April, instead of going to the big theatre chain every week.
Instead of downloading tunes from iTunes you save the money and go to a really cool record shop that's a few miles away. And so on.

the "very poor" whom noone is concerned, who can't afford to buy any of these consumer items at all, whether it is March, April, or whenever.

And, don't boycott big cable for TYT's sake.

The very poor are participating anyway. ;-)
I don't like your "for TYT's sake"-argument.
If they are part of big business, they have to be treated accordingly.
Otherwise the next guy says: " My friend works in this big cinema and it might harm him, if I don't go there." And another: "My friend works at Wallmarts and if I don't buy there he might lose his job." And so on...

was ironic, since obviously big cable is a huge problem. And, sure, big cable should be boycotted like everything else, even if TYT is using big cable to spread its message.

I agree with you completely about the larger point.

how downloading or not downloading ILLEGALLY will affect the big media people at all?  Technically wouldn't downloading illegally be HURTING THEM (if you buy into their fearmongering)?  I don't see how not downloading illegally affects them negatively.  They don't get money from that.

they catch you....:)

Not that many get caught.

You have to make clear, that it was a protest and not you being cheap. If legal sales go down and illigal downloads stay the same or go up they have an additional argument for legislation like this.

we should do more things like this.

Like not fill your car with gas for two weeks, or as long as you can by taking turn carpooling, public transportation, walk, bike, paddle, call out sick.....

That issue will raise it's ugly head this spring with the closing of the Sunoco refinary in Phili this month.

by sisco66 on 02/11/2012 07:48:27 AM EST

It seems two people on this board are really willing to do something, even if it's inconvenient for them.
As usual many people are bitching about how bad SOPA, ACTA, etc. is and what a serious threat to democracy it is, but not buying or downloading songs or movies for one month goes really way too far. Nobody can demonstrate that much dedication, just to save the internet.
I'm not really surprised, but I'll do my best to spread the word and I won't buy or download anything copyrighted in March.

than Sisco merely not filling up his Rolls Royce for two weeks and "slumming it" by taking public transportation for a while like the rest of us.

are your drunk posting again?

Take a look at your to posts in this thread. What did you bring to the conversation? You insulted the author, and now me. Your the type that gives progressives a bad name. You carry a massive cross for yourself and hate for everyone else.

You made a great comment in the housing post, why don't you try sticking to things like that. If you don't know what your talking about, don't insult those that do.

Hate is a strong word. But, yes, I don't especially like upper class blowhards who go around telling others that they don't know what they are talking about, especially since they are shirking their responsibility by not paying enough taxes.

Like I said in a previous post. Your time would be better spent berating your upper class friends and neighbors about not paying enough taxes, than it would be spent berating people who point out that your posts about the ownership society are coming from the perspective of your class - and that the real victims of the ownership society scam are the underclasses, i.e. not your friends and neighbors.

I should have said. My money comes from earned income, so we pay taxes unlike the supper rich who get it from dividends and cap gains. Based on the condition of many of my neighbors and friends, I feel like I am in the upper class, hence more or less. You know, relatively speaking.

Again, you are carrying the cross of hate and it makes you miss the point here and slants what you read. Making your comments inane.

If you want to post a thread on how to help the poor,  I am all in. Lay it out. I will give you all the positive help I can. Simply going around insulting people on things you know nothing about won't get you there.

The quality of the posts here have really fallen off here. Post something about a sitcom, and you will get 30 replies. Try to do something that matters and the handful that post pick at you, but have no idea what they are talking about. Then go to insults when you call them out.

Boycotts really are effective, if done properly. I love a good boycott. Myself, I boycott every business that refuses to take my personal check. And it hurts me, too. I have to make tough decisions. Walmart will take my check, no matter where in the Country I am. The KFC a block away will not. The only problem I'm gonna have supporting this one is the fact that I have never downloaded any music or videos either-legally or otherwise-in my life. And the last movie I saw at a theater was "Million Dollar Baby". But otherwise, count me in!

Try to share the information about Black March with as many people as possible.
I wish TYT would inform about it, but I doubt it.
