The Republican Party vs. George Bush

I believe that people have dramatically underestimated how much damage George W. Bush has done to the Republican Party. A new survey out today begins to show the extent of the damage. In 2002, the number of people who identified themselves as Republican or Democrat was the same. Both parties had 43% of the population on their side.

In 2007, that number has become 50% for the Democrats and 35% for the Republicans. That is an enormous lead for the Democrats. The Pew Research Center says that is the biggest lead either party has ever had since they have been asking the question.

Before the 2006 elections similar numbers were coming out in favor of Democrats in generic questions about party affiliation. Conventional wisdom dismissed those numbers as irrelevant because they wouldn't affect specific Congressional races. The idea was that people hate Congress in general, but love their own Congressmen. Conventional wisdom was wrong.

Why is a Political Operative on the Government Payroll?

Karl Rove is in trouble now for being involved in the decision to fire US attorneys for political reasons. But, of course, he was involved. That's what his job is at the White House: politics.

What I don't understand is why the American taxpayer has to pay for a political operative to operate out of the White House. Of course, every president gets advice about policy and politics from his staff while he is in office. But Karl Rove doesn't do policy, he only does politics.

The White House made this very clear when they moved Rove out of policy positions before the 2006 elections so that he could focus on the 2006 campaign. So, why were we paying him to do that?

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
The most ridiculous campaign strategy from 2006 was the insistence by Repubs that Democrats must present a strategy for what to do in Iraq.  If not, no one should vote for them.

Composite of polls show Dems ahead in the House AND the Senate.  Looks like (assuming no election fraud) some of us are going to be eating quite a few hats after November 7.
