Why Is Hillary Ahead Of Obama In A New Poll?

There is
a new poll showing that Hillary is ahead of Obama in a head to head match-up with McCain.
Many people are taking this to mean that Obama HAS to pick Hillary as VP, while others (overzealous Hillary supporters and right wingers) are spinning this as proof that people are unhappy with Obama and that they wish they had Clinton instead.
So what's the truth? Well, there are a lot of factors here that you're already aware of, so I'm going to focus on another possibility you may not be...

One Question You Need To Ask (To Fight Obama Smears)

Rather than
debunking these associations one by one, I'm going to ask a simple question of anyone who is concerned about Obama's associations (real or imagined):
Can you name ONE policy position or proposal from Obama that is or has been in any way negatively influenced by people like Reverend Wright or William Ayers?

How can we increase forum participation and the quality of the discussions?I know some people are turned off by
trolling (real and imagined) and
thread hijacking while others aren't necessarily crazy about the layout and web tools here.
So what can be done about it? (Yes, that includes you lurkers who never or almost never comment)

(I thought this was an interesting article to share)
Do You Still Believe it Wasn't Speculation?By Jeff Madrick
With crude oil prices now twenty percent below their levels of just a month ago, and other commodities down as much or more, it's time for the countless economists who told us the rapid prices increases had little to do with speculation to stand up and explain themselves.
Now, anyone writing about or discussing economics is going to make mistakes.
But this claim was a whopper. More to the point, and the reason it brings out this writer's passionate anger, is that the rapid rise in prices has caused so much pain for the world's poor.
The simple fact is that prices for any commodity can be moved by speculation about the future. When they are financialized, as is crude oil, it means non-users can make easy bets on future prices that require only a small down payment.
It's just like the stock market. Do stock prices reflect only rational projections of corporate earnings and dividends? We've had enough of irrational exuberance and its opposite to know better now. Then why should oil futures prices reflect only genuine shifts in supply and demand?

So
the latest rumor according to the Enquirer is that John Edwards has some kind of love child. But you know what? Who cares? It’s not like I would ever have voted for a guy who spends $400 on a haircut. Obviously he's off my list if he ever runs again at some point.

Obama needs to do
more of this. It's not negative, it's just hard-hitting calling them out on their bullshit honesty of the sort
Cenk suggested yesterday.

Rant: I Made 1 Late Credit Card Payment, So I Called...

Stupid me. One day late.
Now my interest rate went to the default rate of 28.99%. That's almost TWENTY NINE PERCENT. I'm so pissed and yes, that includes at myself for screwing up and making the payment a few hours later than I should have (didn't show up until the next business day).
And again, I can blame myself for not paying full attention to the terms and conditions. It's true, I signed the papers I signed and nodded yes, etc.
With those disclaimers out of the way, WTF? I called to have my rate lowered and the woman on the phone (the supervisor I got to after the intial CSR) said they review it every 12 months. In other words, I'd have the possibility to have it lowered in a year.
I asked her why they don't offer a one time exception (hell, once a year), or why the penalty is so God Damn high (why not charge a fee or increase the rate by 1%).
I added that her corporation doesn't care about the individuals and the bad economy (that they in part helped to create), they care about increasing their profits as they are legally obligated to have as their top priority. I said it was absurd and unacceptable.

What Do John McCain and John Edwards Have In Common?
Not much other than their first name. Then again they both spend a good deal of money to look stylish.
Remember how Republicans across America (come to think of it, it wasn't only Republicans) brought up
the Edwards $400 haircut day after day after day?

Is McCain Following In Reagan's Footsteps?

So I just heard that
John McCain might be open to raising social security taxes.
As if we didn't already have
plenty of good reasons to vote for Obama, McCain decided to add one more.
As much as conservatives claim to love Reagan, why would McCain raising the social security tax rate bother them? After all, Reagan doubled the social security tax while giving the wealthiest Americans the biggest tax cut in American history.
In order to help make up from the loss of revenue from the tax cuts for the rich (
rich people who pay less taxes than those in the middle class by the way)
Reagan raided the social security trust fund and spent hundreds of billions of dollars.
On top of that he STILL had to borrow more money than all presidents (from George Washington to Jimmy Carter)
combined, thus tripling the national debt.

Friday Fun Post On Women: Do You Pay For Dinner? Drinks?

The other day Ana was talking about how she once went on a first date with a hot guy who didn't pay for her food: Long story short, there was no second date.
Cenk added that guys shouldn't complain and should always buy dinner (at least on the first date) but also that in his experience, the less you do for a girl the more you get (i.e. don't bother buying tons of drinks and take her to fancy dinners, etc.).
So what do you think? Should a guy always buy dinner and if so, should it be fancy? What about drinks at a bar?

I took a serious beating here yesterday when I wrote that
I disagreed with the NY Times decision to not publish McCain's op-ed.
I
really don't want to rehash that whole argument, but my basic point was that I felt the MSM would side with McCain and that this would reinforce the (incorrect) meme that the media is "liberally biased" and or that they all want Obama to win, etc.
But what's done is done and the decision won't be reversed. With that in mind, I think Dems in the media need to stand up and defend the NY Times on this (rather than appearing to be weak and backing down like they usually do). To that end
I was happy to see Bill Richardson show some toughness on Fox News.

Do You Agree With The NY Times Here? I Don't...

New York Times op-ed editor David Shipley wrote in an email to McCain's staff, "It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obama's piece." But, he continued, "I'm not going to be able to accept this piece as currently written."
Shipley further explained in an email to the Drudge Report, saying:
"The Obama piece worked for me because it offered new information (it appeared before his speech); while Senator Obama discussed Senator McCain, he also went into detail about his own plans....It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obama's piece. To that end, the article would have to articulate, in concrete terms, how Senator McCain defines victory in Iraq."
In his July 14 op-ed,
Obama laid out his plan for Iraq. McCain's proposed op-ed is available in full
here...
(For the rest of the above piece, use the HuffPo link at the top of the page or

So What Do You Think About This? I think it's ridiculous.

Last July (2007)

came up with the idea of labeling Fox as "Opinion Media".
He was even invited on Countdown with Keith Olbermann because
apparently Keith liked the idea.
