My Republican co-workers call me a "Libertarian Democrat." I'm socially liberal, with a lot of "Constitution Conservative" tendencies (I support the personal gun ownership interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, for example). I respect the value of the marketplace, think there's way too much federal government, but also believe there's a place for that same federal government in providing a basic level of social services. I am also, like Cenk, a recovering Republican. My own final straw came when the religious right hijacked the party; since then I have no regrets for changing my spots.
I'm a retired USAF officer, and so of course tend to a pro-military viewpoint. I'm also anti-war, as perhaps only someone who's been in a position to have to fight in one can be. I'm bitterly opposed to the misuse of such a precious resource that the current Bush administration has seen fit to indulge. The cream of our youth sacrificing their lives for lies and vainglory is, to me, a literal crime, and I long for the criminal in chief to be punished for it.
The hot button issue for me is my vehement opposition to passing any laws based on religious beliefs. If you can offer a compelling social benefit for a law restricting behavior to exist, we'll talk--otherwise, keep your law out of my life and out of my country.
